Dame Margaret Natalie Smith, simply known as Maggie Smith, is an English actress who has had an extensive and widely varied career. She is the recipient of the Order of the Companions of Honour and the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Maggie Smith appeared in films, television shows and on stage, for over 67 years. Born in Ilford, Essex, Smith began to pursue acting at an early age when she went to the Oxford Playhouse. Having appeared in over 50 films, she is one of the most respected actresses in Britain.
After appearing in numerous plays, Smith also appeared in Broadway. She has various awards to show for her time on stage. As for films, Smith first drew attention and praise to herself for her role in ‘Nowhere to Go’. She has received two Oscars, one for the Best Actress in ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ and one for Best Supporting Actress in ‘California Suite’. It makes her one of the six actresses to have won in both categories. She has also won nominations for films like ‘Othello’, ‘A Room with a View’, ‘Travels with My Aunt’, and ‘Gosford Park’. Some of Maggie Smith’s other notable films include ‘A Private Function’, ‘The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne’ and ‘Tea with Mussolini’. The actress won BAFTAs for all these films.
That being said, Smith is perhaps instantly recognized by the younger generation as the strict but kind Hogwarts professor, Minerva McGonagall in the ‘Harry Potter‘ movies. Some of her other film appearances include ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, ‘Evil Under the Sun’, ‘Death on the Nile’, ‘The Secret Garden’. She is one of the few actresses to have won the triple crown of acting, that is, an Emmy, a Tony, and an Oscar. She has also appeared in numerous television shows, but the one which immediately comes to mind is ‘Downton Abbey‘. At this point you must be wondering what is the next Maggie Smith movie or TV show? Well, here’s the list of upcoming Maggie Smith films and TV shows scheduled to release in 2019 and 2020. We can only hope that the latest Maggie Smith movies would be as good as some of her recent ones.
2. Downton Abbey (2019)
‘Downton Abbey’ is an upcoming drama movie that will continue the story of the television series of the same name. While not much is known about the plot, we know that the movie will pick up 18 months after the events of the season finale of the show. To get a better idea of what happened then, you have to recall that Edith and Bertie were getting married, while Henry and Tom started their own car business.
Meanwhile, Carson’s health stopped him from continuing as a butler. Michael Engler, the director, has promised that the movie will expand the scale of things. It will take all the aspects that viewers love about ‘Downton Abbey‘ — that is, the romance, intrigue and the pageantry — and make it bigger than before. He also said that an event of great magnitude will be taking place at Downton Abbey, which will reunite all the major characters at the main estate. We now know that to be a visit from King George V and Queen Mary in 1927, which causes a stir among the Crawleys and their servants. Maggie Smith is returning as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham. She is the matriarch of the family and it will be interesting to see how she deals with the visit from the illustrious guests.
