Marvel’s Runaways is an American superhero television series that first premiered on November 21, 2017 on Hulu. The show’s creators are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Runaways, which is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and share continuity with the films and other television series of the franchise.
Runaway was first conceived as a film back in May 2008, but was shelved in 2013 due to the success of The Avengers. In August 2016, Marvel Television announced that Runaways had received a pilot order from Hulu, after being developed and written by Schwartz and Savage.
The first season, of 10-episodes, ran until January 9, 2018. In January 2018, Runaways was renewed for a 13-episode second season, which was released in its entirety on December 21, 2018.
Both the seasons of Runaways received universal acclaim from critics with an aggregate of 86% Rotten Tomatoes Score. Liz Shannon of Indiewire had this write about the show: “It’s off to an incredibly compelling start, thanks to Schwartz and Savage’s confident storytelling, and should it keep moving forward at its current pace, it could become a truly addictive hit. As it is, it’s one of Marvel’s most promising series to date.” On season 2, Rotten Tomatoes summarized the critical reception as “Runaways hits the ground running in its sophomore season, but though it deepens the connections between its expansive cast, formulaic stories and an over-dependence on plot devices holds it back from fully maturing into a compelling character study.”
