‘McMafia’ is a crime drama series that first premiered on January 1, 2018, on BBC One, in the UK and then on February 26, 2018, on the AMC in the US. The show draws inspiration from a book of the same name, “McMafia: A Journey through the Global Criminal Underworld.” The book was published in 2008 and is written by the journalist Misha Glenny.
The show, co-produced by Cuba Pictures, AMC, and BBC, sheds light on international criminals, underworld dons and how they function by manipulating governments, intelligence agencies, law, and finance. ‘McMafia’ also impacted and changed the UK law and legislation; a new law was drafted to allow the seizure of foreign assets if a person is not able to prove that he obtained that asset legally.
Needless to say, given the nature of the subject being dealt with, the show enjoys immense popularity. Critics too have praised the series for its intensity and the way vast criminal worlds have been made accessible and understandable to the audiences through this show.
McMafia Cast: Who is in it?
The central role of Alex Godman is played by James Norton. Godman is the British born son of an exiled Russian boss and lives his life in London, trying to outrun the past and get out of the criminal shadows of his family.
Juliet Rylance appears as Rebecca Harper, Alex’s fiancée, while Aleksey Serebryakov and Maria Shukshina, appear as Dimitri and Oksana Godman, Alex’s parents. Faye Marsay plays the role of Katya Godman, Alex’s sister, while we see David Dencik as Boris Godman, Alex’s uncle. There are several other characters, ranging from Israeli businessmen to powerful members of the Russian mob, as we see a vast international criminal empire unfurl in front of our eyes. If you follow Bollywood, you might be interested to know that Nawazuddin Siddiqui appears in the role of Dilly Mahmood, an Indian business partner.
Hopefully, in the upcoming season, if the story picks up from where it left off, we will see Alex and most of the main characters return. Alex will be seen heading the business, having made a transition from reluctant family member to a crime boss, much like Michael Corleone in ‘The Godfather‘.
McMafia Plot: What is it about?
The main plot of ‘McMafia’ is inspired by a bestselling book of the same name. It is an internationally curated crime thriller series that resonates the real world’s breaking news and headlines. The series discovers and dives deep into the world of mafia and tells us the story of mobs who are spreading across the globe. The plot of ‘McMafia’ starts with the story of a man’s revenge and his survival, one which becomes a legendary tale of his struggle. The struggles and fights are all targeted at the corruption in today’s modern world with an element of self-introspection while dealing with the outside world’s issues.
The initial season of the show follows a manager, an investment banker who is also the son of the exiled Russian, Alex Godman. Alex quickly gets lured into the world of crime and corruption. The show finishes with the European markets being filled with heroin after Alex signs a deal with the criminals. Since the author of the book was only able to write it after avid research and interviews with middlemen, and concerned parties, both the source material and the series has an air of grounded reality around it. The series weaved an intricate network spanning across the globe which included money transactions and other deals, showing how the criminal community was in fact at the same level as a post-globalization multinational enterprise.
While we see the Chechen mob’s power at a broader level, on a more personal level, the show is ultimately about Alex’s struggle, first whether he wants to get his revenge and fight for survival, the next struggle is to protect his loved ones, and finally, the last struggle is that against temptation, as Alex finds himself lured more and more into the world of crime. The descent is well documented and many have said that the season is a self-contained drama that needs no continuation. If that is the case, we might see the upcoming season focusing on a different criminal group and maybe in a different country. Organized crime is everywhere and usually, they are linked, This is what the book and the show try to prove. The show makers have expressed their intent about the upcoming season saying it will “cast more light on the shady intersections of transnational criminals and their enablers in finance, law, intelligence agencies and even in governments.” Hence there is a strong possibility that we will follow the trajectory of Alex’s rise within the criminal underworld and maybe even his eventual downfall.
The Guardian sums up the series well, saying, “It’s beautifully put together, the script is a cut above average, and there is a sense of much more power and energy waiting to be unleashed that may well be enough to carry viewers across eight episodes, Europe and most of the Middle East. Whether any of us can cope mentally with being shown what a web of irredeemable mass corruption the world is, I don’t know.”
