Michael Fassbender, the two-time Oscar nominee, is in talks to join Taika Waititi’s latest film that is titled ‘Next Goal Wins’. The film is a sports dramedy that will see the filmmaker reunited with Fox Searchlight. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.

‘Next Goal Wins’ is based on the 2014 British documentary of the same name that comes from Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. It is an underdog story that follows the national football team of the American Samoa along with their coach, Thomas Rongen. Together they try to make the change from perennial losers to a World Cup qualifying outfit. Obviously Fassbender will be appearing in the role of the coach. A casting call has been put out for Fa’afafine actors, who will appear as the team members.

The script for the film has been written by Waititi himself, along with Iain Morris. Garrett Basch, Andy Serkis, Jonathan Cavendish, Brett, and Jamison are on-board as producers. Waititi is already teaming up with Searchlight for the release of the upcoming satire on Nazi Germany titled ‘Jojo Rabbit‘, which revolves around a lonely German boy during World War II, who finds his life turned upside down when he discovers that his mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in her basement. The movie recently made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. After directing ‘Next Goal Wins’, Waititi will move on to Marvel’s Thor movie, titled ‘Love & Thunder‘.

Michael Fassbender was last seen in the X-Men movie, ‘Dark Phoenix‘, where he reprised his role of Magneto. It remains to be seen if he returns as the powerful mutant in the upcoming X-Men movies, now that the franchise belongs to Marvel Studios. He is next slated to appear in ‘Kung Fury 2’. The movie has been described as an action-comedy martial arts movie. It is based on the 2015 short movie of the same name. The basic plot is centered in Miami in 1985 under the watchful eye of Kung Fury and his Thundercops, which is the ultimate police force assembled from all across history to defeat Adolf Hitler, the Kung Fuhrer. The death of a Thundercop causes the group to disband. However, danger lurks as a mysterious villain steps out of the shadows to help Hitler in his quest to attain the ultimate weapon. Now, Fury must travel through time and space, not just to save his friends, but to put an end to the evil once and for all, while defending the Miami Kung Fu Academy.
