Michael Jeffrey Jordan, or MJ, born on 17th February, 1963, is a worldwide famous American (former) professional basketball player. He is also a businessman, and primary owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). MJ played for the Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls for 15 seasons. He is considered the greatest basketball player of all time all over the world. He was a big, sensational deal during his career, and years after retirement, he still holds that honor. MJ proved influential in helping popularize the NBA, in the 1980s and 1990s, globally.

He swiftly arose as a league star, entertaining crowds with his abundant scoring. Due to his ability to leap high which he showed by performing slam dunks from the free throw line in slam dunk contests, got him the nicknames Air Jordan and His Airness. He was one of the best defensive players in basketball. MJ won his first NBA championship with the Bulls in 1991, followed by winning titles in 1992 and 1993, obtaining a “three-peat”. But then before the new season, MJ very abruptly left the basketball scene. He went on to play professional minor league baseball. Then in 1995, he came back to the Chicago Bulls and won them three more championships – 1996 to 1998. In the beginning of 1999, he again retired only to come back to the Washington Wizards for two more seasons (2001-03) at the NBA.
MJ has gathered numerous accolades to his name. He has five MVPs (Most Valuable Player), ten All-NBA First Team designations, ten scoring titles, three steals titles, nine All-Defensive First Team honors, six NBA Finals MVP Awards, three All-Star Game MVPs, fourteen NBA All-Star Game Appearances, and the 1988 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award.He has the highest career regular season and playoff scoring averages. MJ was considered the greatest North American athlete of the 20th century by ESPN in 1999. He was second to Babe Ruth on the Associated Press’s list of athletes of the century. MJ is a two-time inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame, having once been honored for his individual career, and again as part of the group induction of the 1992 United States men’s Olympic basketball team (“The Dream Team”). In 2015, he became a member of the FIBA Hall of Fame.

MJ, over the years, has been associated with various products and brands. He is the reason behind the successful life of Nike’s Air Jordan sneakers, which were introduced in 1985 and continue to be popular to the day. He was part of the movie Space Jam, in 1996, as himself. He went on to become part-owner and in charge of basketball operations for the then-Charlotte Bobcats in 2006; later, in 2010, he bought a controlling interest in the team.

By 2015, due to the upsurge in prices of NBA franchises, MJ became the first billionaire NBA player in the world’s history. He is third, after Oprah Winfrey and Robert F. Smith, on the list of richest African-Americans.
