Over the years, the New York Times column featuring short stories, called Modern Love, about the mundaneness of love in modern society has gone on to have a cult following among readers. ‘Modern Love’, an Amazon Prime series, is actually based on the eponymous NYT column. Common themes of love, loss, and lust run through the anthology web series.
Like the original stories, the romantic comedy anthology series focuses on the trials and tribulations of love in a modern society that is beset with difficulties posed by a lack of time and an over-demanding work environment. It also focuses on the finer aspects of the crisis in human relationships that find a universal echo across cultures and continents.
The series is written, directed and produced by John Carney, who is best remembered for his 2007 movie ‘Once’ and co-creator of the Irish TV series called ‘Bachelors’ Walk’.
The writers had initially shortlisted their favorite NYT columns from the series to “really move a narrative forward for half an hour” and only later did they decide on which stories to finally include in the TV series.
“These stories are successful when the person understands themselves better at the end, not when they get the person that they’re going after,” said Daniel Jones, who is the New York Times editor of the Modern Love series of stories. Amazon, in its statement on the series, said, “[The anthology] explores love in all of its complicated and beautiful forms as each standalone episode brings some of the most beloved stories to life with a stellar cast.”
The first season of the show was well-received. Now, the question arises: will there be a ‘Modern Love’ season 2? We will delve into that question, but first, let’s quickly look into the details of the series.
Modern Love Cast: Who is in it?
The first season of ‘Modern Love’ with names like Anne Hathaway (Interstellar), Tina Fey (Sisters), Dev Patel (Lion), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Catherine Keener (Get Out), Andrew Scott (Fleabag), Shea Whigham (Homecoming), John Slattery (Mad Men), Cristin Millioti (Black Mirror), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), John Gallagher Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane), Julia Garner (Ozark), Gary Carr (Downton Abbey), Brandon Victor Dixon (Power) and Andy Garcia (Ocean’s Eleven) associated with it.
When season 2 premieres, obviously it will consist of a completely new cast. You can rest be assured that most of the cast members will be famous names.
Modern Love Plot: What is it about?
The Modern Love column, which has been running in the New York Times from 2004 onwards, featured stories on love and loss. It is immensely popular among readers. The stories typically explore yearning, desire, and crisis, focusing on love across age groups and cultures. The first season of ‘Modern Love’, the tv show, is based on eight of those stories selected from the NYT columns.
For instance, in ‘The Gift of the Missing Men’, Kema Christian-Taylor focuses on what she calls ‘holiday men’, across ages and generations. These holidaymen — be it the narrator’s grandfather or her father — are men who have perpetually been absent from their homes and have forsaken all familial responsibilities. When the narrator sees that her mother and grandmother have been victims of these holidaymen, her own growing up experience is replete with fears that the “family curse” will also manifest itself in her own life. However, when she grows up to find true love, much to her surprise, she understands that these holidaymen, through their perpetual act of disappearances, have left behind generations of strong matriarchs.
Another story takes place in two time-frames, oscillating between the past love story between Margot and Kenji and the current era, during Kenji’s funeral. An elderly couple, Margot and Kenji connect with each other because of their mutual love for running. Since Kenji is still coping up with the death of his wife, they decide to approach the relationship, one step at a time. However, they eventually get closer. After the funeral, Margot goes for a run and sees several young couples and reminisces about how she has grown through these years.
When season 2 happens, there’s obviously no dearth of material. In fact, like season 1, they will again have the problem of plenty. After all, which stories to pick from more than 750 columns that were published over several years?
Modern Love Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?
Modern Love season 1 premiered on October 18, 2019, on Amazon Prime. All eight episodes, each with a different story to tell, were made available for streaming on the same day.
As far as the next season goes, here’s the good news. Amazon has renewed the show for a second installment. The update came just after one week, following season 1’s debut. Amazon Studios’ head Jennifer Salke confirmed the news saying, “Since its debut just last week, the reaction to Modern Love from viewers has been incredible. It’s a show with so much emotion and warmth — every episode touches the heart in a different way. We’re so excited we’ll be able to bring our global Prime Video customers more of the beautiful stories of romance, friendship, and family from Modern Love.”
John Carney will return to write the second season as well. He expressed his enthusiasm on the renewal, stating, “Being given a green light to proceed with ‘Modern Love’ is a great opportunity for us to continue to tell stories of love while opening up the series into new cities and worlds. The possibilities are truly endless. Subsequent seasons can really branch out and dig deep into what it means to love in this complicated world. It’s incredible news for everyone involved in the series, and we are dizzy with possibilities moving forward.”
Amazon has not released a release date yet, but it did reveal that the show will return in 2020. Our best guess is that ‘Modern Love’ season 2 will most likely premiere sometime in October 2020.
