‘Mortal Kombat’ Movie Casts Kano, Sonya Blade

The upcoming ‘Mortal Kombat’ movie from New Line Cinema has cast actors in the role of Kano and Sonya Blade, two of the heaviest hitting characters. Notably, Jessica McNamee, best known for her appearance in ‘The Meg‘, is in final negotiations for the part of Sonya, while Josh Lawson, the Australian actor, has closed the deal to play Kano. Furthermore, Lewis Tan, who appeared in ‘Deadpool 2‘ and more recently in ‘Wu Assassins‘, is set to play the part of an undisclosed lead character. The film that is being penned by Greg Russo will begin shooting later in 2019 in southern Australia. The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news.

Not much is known about the plot of the film, but the video game on which it is based involves a massive roster of fighters. The characters come from different realms within a fictional universe. As the fate of their universe hangs in the balance, each character gives it their best to ensure that they gain supremacy. Needless to say, there are plenty of fights with fatalities in ‘Mortal Kombat’.

As for the characters, Sonya Blade is the general of Earthrealm Special Forces. She was the first female character to be introduced in the video game franchise and has a long-standing feud with Kano, of the Black Dragon clan. As we previously reported, McNamee, Lawson, and Tan join the cast which already includes Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, the ninja who can manipulate ice, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs, a member of Sonya’s team who is known for his hard-hitting punches, and Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, a monk turned warrior with deadly martial arts moves.

For those unaware, ‘Mortal Kombat’, the video game, first came out in 1992. It has sold over 49 million copies since then, making it one of the most profitable video game franchises of all time. ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ which came out in April 2019 has become the most successfully launched game in the franchise’s history. The video game has previously been adapted and made into a movie in 1995. It has been followed by ‘Mortal Kombat: Annihilation’ in 1997. Both films were rather successful at the time.

‘Mortal Kombat’ is slated to release on March 5, 2021.
