Spy fiction is one of the more recent genres to receive popular satirical treatment. After the ‘James Bond’ age of stoic detectives with hard exteriors, one can say that spy comedy movies have become significantly popular, if not as popular as what serious spy movies might have been. Undoubtedly, the best example of this genre is the 2015 movie, ‘Spy-’ a hilarious tale of an intelligence analyst who is forced to enter the field. Even ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service,’ for instance, featured tons of comedy to make the movies more entertaining overall.
For the upcoming movie, ‘My Spy,’ the American actor and wrestler, Dave Bautista will be seen playing the role of a CIA secret agent. However, the movie will also see him in a lighter role which is something that we don’t get to witness from the WWE star often. It will be exciting to see him play the tough guy with a soft side.
My Spy Plot: What is it about?
‘My Spy’ follows the protagonist called J.J. who is a secret agent for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Although J.J. does not have the best social skills, he believes that he is good at his job. However, one of his operations go horribly wrong and he gets demoted with a warning that entails him being disallowed from working in the field in case of one more failure. Then, he is sent on a relatively low-risk, low-stakes mission of spying on a family.
However, while he is observing family’s house, a nine-year-old member, Sophie finds out that he is an agent leading a double life. She has only one condition to keep her discovery a secret: to be trained by J.J. to become a spy. J.J. is forced to train this little girl while saving his life and hers and also completing his mission. Will he grow a soft spot for her? Will him feeling warmly towards Sophie spoil his mission? There is only one way to find out!
My Spy Cast: Who is in it?
Dave Bautista plays the leading character in the movie, J.J. He is a CIA operative who might be a tough guy but isn’t exactly the sharpest man in the field. For one, he gets caught by a nine-year-old girl. But from the trailer, it looks like J.J. has a heart after all.
Bautista is renowned as his wrestling ring name, Batista. Born in Washington D.C., he started wrestling in 1999 and joined WWE in 2000. He has held a world title by WWE six times and even holds the record for holding one for the longest time. He has returned to WWE twice after departing and both the times, he stayed for a short while till leaving again. Bautista started acting in 2006 but had his first major movie role in 2012’s martial arts movie, ‘The Man with the Iron Fists.’ Moreover, he has appeared in several popular movies like ‘Blade Runner: 2049’ and the James Bond movie, ‘Spectre.’ Plus, he has played the superhero, Drax in Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ its sequel, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
Apart from Bautista, Chloe Coleman plays Sophie, the cute pre-teen who records her discovery of J.J.’s true identity and uses it to blackmail him into training her. Plus, Kristen Schaal plays the role of Bobbi, J.J.’s professional partner. She is an American actress who has lent her voice to several notable movies and television shows. She voiced Louise on ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ Trixie in the ‘Toy Story’ series, Mabel Pines on ‘Gravity Falls’ and multiple characters on Netflix’s ‘Bojack Horseman’ including that of Sarah Lynn. Moreover, she has also acted in ’30 Rock’ and ‘Flight of the Conchords.’
Other cast members include Parisa Fitz-Henley, Ken Jeong of ‘Community’ fame and Nikki Hahn.
My Spy Crew: Who is Behind it?
This upcoming comedy movie is being directed by Peter Segal. The movie is being marketed as Segal’s next venture after ‘Get Smart.’ ‘Get Smart’ is also a spy comedy that was released in 2008 and starred Steve Carell. Apart from that, he has directed the 2013 movie, ‘Grudge Match’ starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone, apart from ‘Anger Management’ and ‘The Longest Yard.’
Other than acting, Dave Bautista also serves as a producer for ‘My Spy’ alongside Segal. The movie is written by Jon and Erich Hoeber while Larry Blanford has handled the cinematography. Dominic Lewis has been roped in to compose the movie’s music.
My Spy Release Date: When Does it Premiere?
‘My Spy’ is scheduled to release on January 10, 2020. The movie began filming in August last year and is planned as being the first installment in a series of movies.

You can watch the trailer for ‘My Spy’ below. It was released in April last year and has already racked up close to 3.5 million views on the video streaming platform. It is a decent preview of the movie’s slick action sequences and family-friendly humor. Bautista plays the character of the tough action hero with ease while showing his soft and funny side at the same time.
