Nancy Pelosi, real name Nancy Patricia D’Alesandro Pelosi, was born on 26 March 1940 to Annunciata M. ‘Nancy’ D’Alesandro and Thomas D’Alesandro Jr. She was born in an Italian-American family and is the youngest child of the 6 children. Nancy began getting involved with politics since an early age as her father Thomas was a politician and New Deal Democrat. She went to the Institute of Notre Dame and later went to Trinity College. Nancy graduated from the College in the year 1962 with a BA in political science. She later worked as an intern for Senator Daniel Brewster.

Nancy Pelosi is an American politician who is the first women to serve as the speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 and later as the minority leader since the year 2011. In the year 1963, she got married to Paul Pelosi. The couple has five children together. Soon the family shifted to San Francisco where Nancy began working as a volunteer Democratic organizer. She earned a good reputation and soon served as the party chair of the California Democratic Party from 1981 to 1983. Later, Nancy served as the chair of the Democratic National Committee by succeeding over Chuck Manatt in the year 1983.

The same year, Nancy became friends with Congressman Phillip Burton who soon died and was succeeded by his wife named Sala. However, Sala also fell ill with cancer and before her death in the year 1987, she urged Nancy to run the seat. Nancy went on to win a special election and re-elected to a full term in the year 1988. She later went on to win subsequent elections in her Democratic district.

In the year 2002, Nancy was elected as the House Minority Whip. She started to push for unity among the various factions within her party by embracing moderates and conservatives. She continued to vote in favor of liberal causes such as abortion rights and gun control and voted against Iraq war.

After the midterm elections in the year 2006, the Democrats earned a majority in the House of Representatives. In the year 2007, Nancy was elected as the speaker of the House. After Barack Obama was appointed as the US president in the year 2009, Nancy became a vocal supporter of several of his policies. She played a major role to secure health care reform which was eventually passed in the year 2010. As the economy continued to struggle, Nancy’s popularity slowly started declining. Though Democrats faced an electoral setback in the 2010 midterm elections, Nancy sought to continue as the minority leader. She was elected as the minority leader for the 112th Congress in the year 2011.
