‘NCIS’ is tv’s longest-running scripted, non-animated primetime series after ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit‘. 17 years and counting, the show has boasted a strong viewership and consistent ratings. Hence, it is no surprise that CBS has been continually renewing the drama every year. From its launch in 2003, ‘NCIS’ has spanned 17 seasons to date. So, will it survive yet another renewal round? Well, let’s take you through the ifs and whens of ‘NCIS’ season 18.

NCIS Season 18 Release Date: When Will It Premiere?

‘NCIS’ season 17 premiered on September 24, 2019, on CBS. After airing for 20 episodes, it wrapped up on April 14, 2020.

The 17th edition of ‘NCIS’ was originally commissioned for 22 episodes. It was also noteworthy for one reason — its previously planned finale (episode 22) was supposed to be the milestone 400th episode for the series as a whole. But unfortunately, because of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, production had to wrap up early. Season 17 was cut short by 2 episodes and ended with its 20th episode.

Co-showrunner Frank Cardea explained that the crew was all set to shoot episode 399 when Hollywood came to a standstill in March 2020. Episode 400 was planned directly after that. But he also stated that they will probably film the episode as no. 400 only in the future.

Yes, the creative team has hinted that the landmark 400th episode will make its way as the second episode of season 18 — which has already received a go-ahead from CBS! The news was, however, expected. With an average viewership of over 10 million per episode, it was highly unlikely that CBS would pull the plug on one of its leading revenue generators.

‘NCIS’, since its launch, has always been a part of CBS’ annual fall lineup. But it is unlikely that season 18 will land in September this year — again because of speculated delays due to the global health crisis. Our best guess is that ‘NCIS’ season 18 will most likely release sometime in 2021.

NCIS Season 18 Cast: Who Can Be In It?

Star Mark Harmon, who plays Leroy Jethro Gibbs and has been the backbone of ‘NCIS’ from season 1, will definitely make a comeback in season 18 as well. Joining Gibbs will be the other staple characters of the series, namely, Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll), Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham), Dr. Jack Sloane (Maria Bello), Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen), Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover), and Dr. Donald Mallard (David McCallum).

NCIS Season 18 Plot: What Can It Be About?

‘NCIS’ revolves around the cases tackled by the special agents of the Major Case Response Team (MCRT) of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Each episode usually tackles one case. The finale of season 17 sees Gibbs and crew investigating the claims of a 95-year-old man named Joe Smith. Joe says that he had been a part of the U.S.S. Arizona during the Pearl Harbor attacks. He wants his ashes to be scattered in the spot after his death.

Season 18 will rope in multiple interesting cases to be tackled by the NCIS crew. Moreover, it will also include the milestone 400th episode, which has already been hinted to contain several interesting and momentous story arcs.
