American Pie 5: Everything We Know

Few movie franchises can lay claim to being as puerile, yet still memorable and culturally influential, as the early 2000s teen sex comedy film series ‘American Pie’. Not only did the movies leave audiences rolling with laughter, they also popularized the genre itself and inspired countless other similar movies and TV shows.

Characters like Steve Stifler and Noah Levenstein are now immortalized in popular culture, and fans continue to cry out for a new sequel even today. However, is there even going to be one? Read on to find out everything we know about ‘American Pie 5’, and whether it will ever see the light of day.

American Pie Series Retrospective

The first ‘American Pie’ released in the year 1999 is a teen sex comedy starring Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eddie Kaye Thomas as four high school seniors named James “Jim” Levenstein, Chris “Oz” Ostreicher, Kevin Myers and Paul Finch respectively.

The sexually frustrated gang of four from East Great Falls High School in West Michigan make a pact with each other to lose their virginity before their graduation day. Each of the four friends sets about their task, with Kevin trying to persuade his girlfriend Vicky Lathum (played by American actress Tara Reid), who promptly rejects his advances and accuses him of using her. Oz joins the school jazz choir at manages to catch the attention of choir girl Heather.

Meanwhile, Jim sets his sights on a Slovakian exchange student named Nadia (played by American actress Shannon Elizabeth). Also along for the ride are Sean William Scott’s fan favorite Steve Stifler, the sexually deviant practical joker who often finds himself at the butt of jokes, and Jim’s dad Noah Levenstein (played by Canadian actor and comedian Eugene Levy) who keeps awkwardly trying to dispense sex advice to his son.

Of course, all of them fall flat on their faces, with Heather eventually rejecting Oz for his negative reputation as an arrogant jock and Nadia being sent back to her home country after an embarrassing sexual encounter with Jim that was accidentally broadcast for all to see. Despite this, trailing behind them all is Finch, who resorts to paying Vicky’s friend Jessica $200 to spread fake rumors of his sexual prowess.

As the band gets desperate, they decide to go for a final Hail Mary at Stifler’s post prom party. Kevin and Vicky finally get together but break up afterward due to both of them leaving for college fairly soon. Oz confesses his mistakes to Heather and professes his love for her, and the two have sex. Jim decides to ask out band camp girl Michelle Flaherty (played by ‘How I Met Your Mother’ actress Alyson Hannigan). Even Finch manages to fulfill the pact, cavorting with Stifler’s lascivious mom in the basement (much to Stifler’s great horror, who promptly faints from shock upon discovering them naked together on the pool table).

The gang returned two years later for 2001’s ‘American Pie 2’, together on their first summer break from college. They decide to go away to a beach house together for the entire summer and continue their egregious sexual escapades. This time around, Jim seeks advice from his old prom date Michelle with his burgeoning relationship with Nadia, who is returning from Slovakia soon. Finch gets involved in various hijinks in an attempt to get Stifler’s mom back into bed (well, pool table) with him. Kevin spends his holiday trying to get over his high school girlfriend Vicky and Oz spends it trying to awkwardly have phone sex with his girlfriend Heather, who is in Spain.

Two years later a third movie titled ‘American Wedding’ released with the gang now older and slightly wiser (except Stifler, who is still the same entertaining degenerate he was in the previous films). Jim and his girlfriend Michelle Flaherty are getting married, and all family and friends are invited (except Stifler, who forces his way into the wedding proceedings). An excited Stifler starts planning a Bachelor Party for one last hurrah before Jim begins a new chapter in his life.

Fans had to wait a long time for the fourth movie in the series titled ‘American Reunion’ which was released in 2012, over a decade after its predecessor. The band returns to East Great Falls, Michigan for their high school reunion. Jim is still married to Michelle and the two of them now have a two-year old son named Evan.

Oz is a professional sportscaster, Kevin is an architect and married to a woman named Ellie, Stifler is a temp at an investment firm and Finch is supposedly a world traveler still in search of true love. The movie features a somewhat different vibe, as the gang’s all grown up now, but that doesn’t stop them from getting involved in all sorts of ill-advised shenanigans when they get together. Oh, and Stifler finally gets his opportunity for revenge when he meets Rachel, Finch’s mom.

American Pie 5 Plot: What Could it Be About?

Not much is known about the plot of ‘American Pie 5’ yet, but some rumors have suggested that it will be a vacation story where the gang get into trouble while partying in Vegas. If true, the movie would certainly give off some serious ‘The Hangover’ vibes, which is by no means a bad thing. Considering that it’s been a while since the last movie, we can expect the gang to be much older in the film as well as in real life. There will be new challenges to contend with including kids, marriages, divorces and an aging Stifler in his mid forties.

It is also possible that we will see a massive shift in tone in ‘American Pie 5’, considering the fact that the series’ style of comedy has slowly gone out of style. Even in 2012, ‘American Reunion’ performed poorly at the box office in the US, and the new movie could shake things up with a few new characters and substories.

American Pie 5 Cast and Crew: Who Is Behind The Movie?

The first four movies were written and directed by duo Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz. Both are expected to return direct ‘American Pie 5’, with some rumors indicating that a script has already been written. The main cast of Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Sean William Scott, Alyson Hannigan and Eugene Levy are likely to reprise their respective roles, with Tara Reid also possibly joining the cast.

American Pie 5 Release Date: When Will it Premiere?

Currently, there is no release date for ‘American Pie 5’, which isn’t surprising since the movie hasn’t even entered pre-production yet. Actress Tara Reid, who plays Vicky Lathum in the American Pie franchise revealed last year that she expects a sequel to happen soon based on her conversations with the creators at a party. Even if production on the project starts very soon, the soonest ‘American Pie 5’ can release sometime in December 2021 or later.
