As far as universe creation goes when it comes to television shows, no one has done as stellar a job as Vince Gilligan, who came up with ‘Breaking Bad‘, the series, and the sequel film ‘El Camino’. The series follows the exploits of a high school chemistry teacher, Walter White, who is diagnosed with cancer, and his former student, Jesse Pinkman. Together they start to cook meth and soon realize that their product is in extremely high demand. Over time, their empire expands as they become further enmeshed in a life of crime that results in a bloody ending. While Walter meets a definitive death in ‘Breaking Bad’ itself, Jesse’s fate is somewhat more ambiguous. Sure, his fortunes turn as he escapes his Neo-Nazi captors and manages to free himself of Walter’s influence as he drives away. However, Jesse’s fate still remains uncertain as he now has to deal with the aftermath of his actions as he tries to evade the law and start a new life.
‘El Camino’ firmly deals with Jesse’s situation, giving us glimpses into how he was tortured and the many pains he has to go through before he can leave his old life behind and give happiness another chance with a new identity in Alaska. While Jesse’s story might have come to a conclusion, Gilligan has created a universe that fans simply cannot forget. Thus, the question you might be asking yourself is whether there will be a sequel to ‘El Camino’. We are here to answer that.
El Camino Sequel Plot: What Could it be About?
‘El Camino’ is the tale of Jesse’s escape to freedom and all that he has to do to achieve it. Throughout the movie, we see the many hurdles he has to face, including gathering the money to facilitate his escape. Masterful flashbacks give us deeper insight into the torture and trauma Jesse had to face, and his current predicament is not better either as he has to go up against gun-wielding welders who are not afraid to break the law for a big payday.
Despite all this, Jesse manages to claw his way to freedom and the end of the movie sees him driving off to Alaska, under the new identity of Mr. Driscoll. He seems content, and at peace with himself. In fact, he smiles as he recalls a conversation with Jane where they decide not to let the universe dictate where they will land up, instead choosing to regain control of their lives. Jesse clearly plans on not losing control of his life anytime soon.
So, if there is a sequel, what could it be about? Well, firstly, in order to gain his freedom Jesse leaves a trail of bodies. That could very well come back to haunt him, as could the trick he pulls to get his parents out of the house. Jesse’s getaway is not very clean when all things are considered. The law enforcement is still looking for him and though Alaska is pretty far from Albuquerque, one simply does not escape the kind of life Pinkman led.
Moreover, in ‘Breaking Bad’, we saw Jesse’s association with the Mexican cartels and though Gus seemed to take care of them, the cartel is not likely to forget. This brings us to various other criminal elements who might be after Jesse since he is the next best cook of the pure blue meth after Walter, who dies at the end of the series. Jesse has made it mighty clear that he is done with his criminal life and is looking to leave all that behind, but a combination of large amounts of money and threats to his loved ones, especially Brock, could be enough to coax Pinkman out of retirement and back to the meth-cooking business. If Vince Gilligan does decide to make a direct sequel to ‘El Camino’, the director has left several strands that could be explored in Jesse’s life itself.
El Camino Sequel Cast: Who is Going to be in it?
In the eventuality that we do get a sequel to ‘El Camino,’ we definitely expect Aaron Paul to reprise the role of Jesse Pinkman. Paul has delivered a tremendous performance in the movie where he has captured Jesse’s existential angst and maturity, which is well contrasted with the easygoing performance Paul delivered in the earlier seasons of the show. Jesse’s character has matured thanks to the evolving performances delivered by Aaron Paul and we cannot wait to see him return as Jesse Pinkman. Apart from him, a lot of the old cast is actually dead or hiding.
We would not mind seeing Saul (Bob Odenkirk) back in action, out of Nebraska. Mike (Jonathan Banks) and Walter (Bryan Cranston) are bound to appear in flashbacks due to the immense impact they had on Jesse’s life. There are several other characters who could appear just as well, like Skinny Pete and Badger. Overall, it depends on the kind of story that Gilligan wants to tell, but the ‘Breaking Bad’ universe is so full of fascinating characters that it will be an interesting watch either way.
El Camino Sequel Crew: Who Could be Behind it?
The entire ‘Breaking Bad’ universe is the brainchild of Vince Gilligan. ‘El Camino’ has been directed by him and is based on a screenplay by him as well. Thus, if there is a sequel to ‘El Camino’ one can be sure that Vince Gilligan will be heavily involved.
El Camino 2 Release Date: When Will it Premiere?
‘El Camino’ premiered on Netflix on October 11, 2019. Vince Gilligan has not made any announcements about a sequel yet. Considering the amount of time that transpired between ‘Breaking Bad’ and the movie, fans can be sure to be in for another long wait before ‘El Camino 2’ comes out. However, in the meantime, you can check out the spinoff prequel ‘Better Call Saul‘, which explores the quirky life of Saul Goodman before he became involved with White and Pinkman.
