You are probably very familiar with the stoner comedy genre of films, with some very popular modern comedies such as ‘Pineapple Express, ‘Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle’ and ‘The Big Lebowski’ being part of the genre. However, the movies that inspired the aforementioned movies and practically spawned the genre all by itself are increasingly forgotten.
Grammy Award winning comedy duo Cheech and Chong are the poster boys and progenitors of the stoner comedy realm of cinema, and they might just return back to the big screen to the delight fans in the near future. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming new Cheech and Chong movie.
Cheech and Chong Series Retrospective: What Can We Expect From the New Movie?
It all started out with the 1978 stoner comedy ‘Up in Smoke’ directed and produced by American record producer Lou Adler. An unemployed pot smoking drummer named Anthony “Man” Stoner (played by Tommy Chong) hitches a ride with fellow smoker Pedro de Pacas (played by Cheech Martin). The two decide to go in search of some weed to smoke but accidentally end up getting deported to Mexico. In desperation, they find themselves agreeing to drive a van back to the United States, which turns out to be a part of a plot to smuggle weed.
On the way, the duo meet a couple of female hitchhikers and unknowingly dodge police officers they don’t even know were following them. ‘Up in Smoke’ received plenty of negative attention when it initially released, but has since become something of a cult classic, establishing an entirely new genre of comedy movies – the stoner comedy.
The follow-up to the original came two years later and is titled ‘Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie’. This time, Tommy Chong himself directs the movie, which revolves around Cheech losing his job, his angry neighbor and his feeling for the gorgeous Donna. Meanwhile, Chong and Cheech’s cousin Red set about to explore Hollywood in a Ferrari.
In the third feature film titled ‘Nice Dreams’, Cheech and Chong start peddling a new kind of weed strain that transforms smokers into reptiles in the guise of ice cream sellers. In 1982’s follow up ‘Things Are Tough All Over’, Cheech and Chong are struggling musicians who think they have their lucky break when wealthy Arab Mr Slyman and Prince Habib (also played by Cheech and Chong respectively) hire them to chauffeur them from Chicago to Las Vegas in a limousine.
Next year’s ‘Still Smokin’ sees Cheech and Chong reunite once again and go to the Amsterdam film festival where they are mistaken for Burt Reynold and Dolly Parton respectively. The duo decide to run with it and plenty of hilarity ensues.
The sixth feature film ‘Cheech & Chong’s The Corsican Brothers’ is a spoof adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novella ‘The Corsican Brothers’, while the duo’s most recent film collaboration is 2013’s ‘Cheech & Chong’s Animated Movie’ and features the iconic duo as cartoon versions of themselves.
As for a new Cheech and Chong movie, there are a few things we can already predict it will be about. First of all, lead actors and the eponymous duo of Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong will undoubtedly be reprising their roles as hopeless stoners Cheech and Chong in any possible new film. Once again, their love of Mary Jane and their pursuit of it is going to lead them astray and put them in all sorts of unsavory situations. Surely we can expect plenty of laughs and gags as the two hippie stoners try to finagle their way out of a new predicament of their own making. With the lead duo now considerably older, it could be a whole new window into the familiar characters we already know and love.
New Cheech and Chong Movie Cast and Crew: Who Could Be Behind The Movie?
The new Cheech and Chong movie is very likely written by duo Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong themselves, with Tommy Chong could quite possibly also directing. Back in 2014 there was also talk of Jay Chandrasekhar, director of the 2001 comedy film ‘Super Troopers’ taking over the directorial reigns on the project. Of course, Cheech and Chong will return as lead actors and reprise their roles as Cheech and Chong respectively.
New Cheech and Chong Movie Release Date: When Will it Premiere?
At this current moment in time, there is no information on when the new Cheech and Chong movie will release or even when it will go into production. All things considered, I wouldn’t expect the new movie to release anytime before 2022.
