How did New Edition earn their money and wealth?
New Edition is a famous American R&B music group which was formed in the year 1978 in Boston, Massachusetts. The group started off with five members initially named Ricky Bell, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe who produced hits such as ‘Candy Girl,’ ‘Cool It Now,’ as well as ‘Mr. Telephone Man’ and earned a lot of popularity in the 1980s. However, Bobby Brown signed out of the group in the year 1985 and decided to embark a solo music career. The 4 members continued for some time but eventually recruited Johnny Gill as a new member in the year 1988 and released a new music album ‘Heart Break.’
In the year 1990, the group split and each group member concentrated on his solo music careers. However, all the six group members reunited in the year 1996 and released their sixth album ‘Home Again.’ The group went on to a Home Again tour to promote the album; however, both Bobby Brown and Michael Bivins quit the group which led to the tour being canceled.
The last album of the group remains to be ‘One Love’ in the year 2004. In the year 2011, the group reunited again mainly with the aim to mark the 30th anniversary of their album ‘Candy Girl.’ The same year, the members of the group made an announcement that they all would be reuniting and releasing another album. Besides, they also made the announcement that after the recording of the album is done, they would go on a tour to promote it. These announcements were made by New Edition through their official website.
In the year 2012, the group received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Soul Train Awards ceremony. In June 2016, Vin Di Bona, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Walk of Famer made the announcement of New Edition getting inducted on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording. The group finally earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for their outstanding contributions to the music industry in January 2017.
Around the same time, BET aired the biopic miniseries titled ‘The New Edition Story’ which was based on the life of the band members starting from their childhood in Boston and later their journey in Hollywood. The series was developed by Chris Robinson while Jessie Collins was the executive producer. The miniseries received 28.4 million viewers in its initial run, which increased over a week of the premiere. The members were later gifted with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Awards held in 2017.
