Everything We Know About Ghostbusters 3

Whenever we hear the term Ghostbusters, our childhood nostalgia rushes in through the door. The franchise and the people have become synonymous with the awesome 80s. They have influenced pop culture massively. ‘Ghostbusters’ has one of the most iconic and memorable songs used in films and our childhood was never the same after hearing it. The first two films came out in 1984 and 1989 respectively and were directed by Ivan Reitman. They had ghosts, paranormal feels, proton guns, a great car, likable cast, humor, and an awesome theme song. Basically everything we could have asked from a summer blockbuster. These films were made for kids and entertained them thoroughly.

The first ‘Ghostbusters’ has become a cult classic. The second one that came out 5 years later couldn’t exactly repeat the predecessor’s success. It was entertaining to some extent but that’s about it. The sequel brought back the retired heroes but it didn’t have the charm and fun of the prequel. In terms of entertainment and recall value, it had some bearings with the first one. But the script was half-baked and offered nothing new. The villain wasn’t sketched out properly and overall, despite Bill Murray‘s performance and a few funny scenes, it felt bland.

The first film gathered such immense fan following that anything that came after it failed to reach its high pedestal. 27 years later, we got a very new take on the franchise. With an all-female cast, our old known Ghostbusters rebooted with a lot of changes. It attracted more controversies than money at the box office. So when we heard about another future Ghostbusters project in the pipeline, we had our reservations. But as it turns out, the new Ghostbusters will follow the original timeline and not the female-led one. So it is indeed going to be ‘Ghostbusters 3’.

Ghostbusters: Recap

‘Ghostbusters’ came out in 1984. It was a perfect story with action, comedy, supernatural beings, and a New York setting. Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Dr. Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) are expert parapsychologists. After their fishy experiments regarding paranormal activities, they attract the administration’s ire. Soon, they find themselves out of favor.

However, the trio decides to further their experiments. They set up their business under the name ‘Ghostbusters’ and start catching tiny ghosts and small-time spirits. They charge money to get rid of these paranormal demons throughout New York City. With their iconic proton guns, the ghostbusters become very famous. But then they are thrown into jail because of jealousy and petty politics. But the menacing ancient God Gozer the Gozerian has risen up to wreak havoc on the mortals. The mayor of the city has no other option but to believe in the ghostbusters. They are set free as they face their biggest threat yet. The movie ends perfectly on a concluding note.

The song, suits, and guns became the craze of the country as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis attain never-seen-before fame. It had a great script from Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, it was well-acted, and it was funny to boot. The second film came out 5 years later. And not everyone was looking for a sequel since the first film was regarded so highly. Nonetheless, the fanbase that was created by the first film compelled the makers to cash in on the nostalgia.

In the second film, the ghostbusters are retired now. The collateral damage from their endeavors has dissolved the group. However, as demons keep threatening the world, the ghostbusters have no choice but to return. It all starts with Peter’s ex-wife’s son Oscar being influenced by a new evil spirit. She turns to the team of ghostbusters as they are forced to come out of retirement to investigate a new threat torturing the city. They discover a river of ectoplasmic slime forming beneath the city. They also have to face a sixteenth-century monster. The sequel had a somewhat commercial gain, particularly because of the goodwill that the first film created. Yet, die-hard fans of ‘Ghostbusters’ always wanted something more. Bill Murray has also been quite vocal about it over the years, terming it as ‘disappointing’.

The second film’s failure made the possibility of a third film a bit vague. Aykroyd and Ramis tried to make more ghostbusters movies but somehow it didn’t come to fruition. So when Ramis died in 2014, the studio hired Paul Feig and he decided to reboot the series with groundbreaking changes.

Thus, ‘Ghostbusters: Answer to Call’ (2016) came into being. The beloved members of the team were reimagined with an all-female cast. It featured Melissa McCarthy as Abby Yates, Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert, Kate McKinnon as Jillian Holtzman, Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan and Chris Hemsworth as Kevin Beckman. The film attracted a great deal of attention, but for all the wrong reasons. The gender inversion faced extreme criticism on the internet. Before judging the film on its merits as a film, long-time fanboys with an unhealthy fascination for the franchise broke all the boundaries of misogyny. Actors including Leslie Jones faced racial and sexist slurs. Turned out, the film wasn’t well made either. It bombed at the box office and with it went away any hope of seeing the female ghostbusters again.

This film’s failure bought the attention back to the original timeline. Ramis’ death caused a roadblock for actual ‘Ghostbusters 3’ but the son of Ivan Reitman, Jason stepped up to the occasion. He wanted to continue the original Ghostbusters saga, so ‘Ghostbusters 3’ is now back on track.

Ghostbusters 3 Cast: Who’s in it?

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson will return to reprise their original roles. Sadly Harold Ramis passed away in 2014, so there might be someone else in his place. Sigourney Weaver will also come back to play Dana Barrett. So will the fan-favorite Ecto-1 car. Among the new joiners, there will be Paul Rudd (‘Ant-Man’) in a yet undisclosed role. Finn Wolfhard of ‘Stranger Things’ fame and McKenna Grace of ‘Captain Marvel’ (2018) will be the siblings. Carrie Coon is expected to play the role of the mother of these two. The director, as mentioned earlier, is Jason Reitman. He has also written the script with Gil Kenan.

Ghostbusters 3 Plot: What is it about?

The story of the third film will continue with the original members of the Ghostbusters. But it will also introduce new young characters into the narrative. As Jason Reitman has told, it all starts with a 12 years old girl and her 13-year-old brother who get entangled with conspiracy theories and supernatural beings. It will feature a group of four young people coming back to an old town where they experience eerie events. The story is set in the 21st century but the events of the 1980s will have bearings on it.
