Everything We Know About Jumanji: The Next Level

The Jumanji franchise took a giant step forward (or backward?) with ‘Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle’ (2017). A major hit at the box office, the film starred Dwayne Johnson, Jack Back, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Nick Jonas in leading roles. The success of the film encouraged the makers to make a sequel, and as reports state, the third movie of the franchise shall hit the theatres later this year. The second movie was set 21 years after the events in the first one. The name of the second movie has also been taken from one of the earliest successes of Dwayne Johnson in his film career, namely ‘Welcome to The Jungle’ (2003).

The success of the sequel in 2017 surpassed all expectations. It ended up earning $962 million at the international box office on a budget of around $100 million. Moreover, it did so while releasing on the same day as ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘.

After the massive success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas floated the possibility of Jumanji 3 in various interviews. Finally, in February 2018, it was announced that Kasdan would direct the sequel, with Rosenberg and Pinkner again writing the script. In July 2019, the film’s title was revealed as Jumanji: The Next Level.

Jumanji 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?

The sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle is scheduled to release on December 19, 2019. The first Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle also release in December. Clearly, the makers want to take advantage of the Holiday season and attract family audience.

Jumanji 3 Cast: Who is in it?

All the major characters of the previous film will be brought back in this movie. Which means this movie will be a directed sequel and not a spinoff. Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role of the explorer called Smolder Bravestone. Johnson is now one of the biggest stars of Hollywood and has had decent successes with movies like ‘Rampage’ (2018) and ‘Skyscraper’ (2018). Johnson’s Fast and Furious spinoff ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ also turned out to be one of the biggest hits of year.

Jack Black will also be back as Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon. Karen Gillan will also continue her role as Ruby Roundhouse, the fearless woman who takes on challenges as bravely as Bravestone. This movie will be another important project for her this year after she appeared as Nebula in ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Kevin Hart will reprise his role as Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Milo’s avatar who was formerly Fridge’s, a diminutive zoologist and weapons specialist. Another actor who is returning to reprise his role is singer/songwriter Nick Joan of the Jonas Brothers. In the last movie, Jonas played the role of Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough. Jonas’ character is very important in understanding the timeline and the backstory of the game. The children who were earlier playing as the characters in the book are also coming back in the sequel. Alex Wolff, Ser’Darius Blain, Morgan Turner and Madison Iseman will all be back for the new movie.

The new members joining the cast of the original movie are Awkwafina, Danny Glover, and Danny DeVito. Awkwafina  is cast as Bethany’s new avatar whose name is yet to be announced. Danny DeVito will play Eddie Gilpin, Spencer’s cranky but well-meaning grandfather. Danny Glover has been cast as Milo Walker, Eddie’s eccentric friend.

Jumanji 3 Plot: What is it about?

‘Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle’ ends after the kids decide to set the dangerous game on fire. But if there is a new movie coming out with the same characters, it only means that the game was not destroyed. So, we have to know at first where the game is, how it managed to save itself from the fire and took back its initial form. This is the third installment of the series and it seems to be the right time now when the game is given a proper backstory and we go on to find out who created the game, how it first came into contact with human beings, and so on. Director Jake Kasdan has said that this film will have references to the 1995 classic starring Robin Williams.

This can only mean that we will get to know something about the game’s origin. Interestingly, on February 22, 2019, Jack Black, one of the film’s stars, confirmed the new film as being a fourth Jumanji film because of Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005) serving as the second film and sharing continuity with the other films of the series, with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle serving as the third film.
