‘On My Block’ is a coming of age tv series that airs on Netflix and first premiered on March 16, 2018. The show has been created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft, who also serve as executive producers. The series has Cat Crazy Lady Productions to thank for its help in the development process, while the producers include Jamie Dooner, Robert Sudduth, and Hal Olofsson.

If a cursory scroll through the trending pages of Netflix is anything to go by, the statistics say that most of the shows in the drama category are in some way or the other a coming-of-age story. The genre offers it all – it has an easily scriptable premise, can create a relatable stranger in a strange land the protagonist, and has an in-built graph for character development with the show’s progression.

Naturally, the oversaturation of the TV drama circle with a tide of coming of age stories would mean that most turn out to be stale run-of-the-mill shows with little to their uniqueness of substance. In lieu of this, the Netflix original ‘On My Block’ really sticks out from the crowd. In fact, it was the first breakout hit in the genre after it aired on the streaming platform. The show has a solid foothold and a consistent vision of what it wants to be, vis-a-vis, a no-frills dramedy harking back to the high school classics, with slangy pop culture references aplenty.

On My Block Cast: Who’s in it?

The main cast of ‘On My Block’ includes Sierra Capri who plays Monse Finnie, a headstrong Afro-Latina. Monse is a tomboy and the leader of her group of friends. She is shown to be raised by a single father and is the star-crossed lover of another main character Cesar. Coming to Cesar Diaz, the character is played by Diego Tinoco. Cesar starts off as an intelligent teen, but he is soon forced into the lifestyle of a gangbanger once his brother is released from prison. Naturally, this causes a strain in his relationship with Monse. Jason Genao plays Ruben “Ruby” Martinez, the math whiz and moral conscience of the group, while Brett Gray portrays Jamal Turner, an African-American nerd. Jessica Maria Garcia has also become a full-time member of the class as Jasmine, a fellow classmate of the group.

As a dramedy about coping with adolescence, the show is invariably character-driven throughout its run, and since the theme is not going to change, we expect at least most of the cast to return in the upcoming season, if not all of them. More importantly, new characters are bound to get thrown into the mix, who will not only test the group’s unity but also make the plot more intriguing and drive it forward.

On My Block Plot: What is it about?

‘On My Block’ is basically centered around some inner-city teens who find their friendship tested as they begin high school. The story is gritty and Los Angeles can have its share of mean streets for the lesser privileged. The show follows a rag-and-tag group of high-school teenagers as they face the many trials of adolescence in the inner-city Los Angeles setting. The initial episodes give out the 90’s classic high school sitcom vibes with all its antics. However, things escalate to a much more dramatic and serious stature as the show progresses – with its good measure of romance, plot twists, and a gun.

The show teaches us that kids who grow up rough, quickly learn the ways of the streets and the fact that friends and family are the only people who you can count on to have your back no matter what. However, the show also takes a critical look at how crime and lifestyle choices are linked to the socioeconomic conditions of families in Los Angeles, and how some of the kids are destined to end up sporting gang colors and holding a gun in their hands. This is especially true for Cesar who is coerced into joining the gang by his brother and as the show progresses, we see him get more entrenched.

‘On My Block’ addresses the widespread problem that has long plagued America where youths get into gang violence as it offers them a false sense of power and a misguided method to making some quick money. The show also stands out for the way it deals with each character, highlighting the motivations for their actions and placing it all against the wider social fabric that drives said actions. Since these characters also happen to be high school students, we have the advantage of seeing a show that is interspersed with humor and situations that will be familiar to anyone who has walked down the halls in their high school years.

Hopefully, in the upcoming season, the show will continue its excellent social commentary and nuanced character development. Without giving much away, the initial seasons showed Brett stumbling upon a treasure and suddenly becoming $200,000 richer. While this might be a lot of money for any of the main characters on ‘On My Block’ you can bet your bottom dollar that the money belongs to someone else and they will turn up in the upcoming season looking for payback. It will be interesting to see how the group deals with this additional concern while struggling with everyday life on the streets beside dealing with the possibility of danger and even death lurking in every corner.

On My Block Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘On My Block’ Season 2 released on March 29, 2019. As far as the next season goes, we have good news for the fans. On April 29, 2019, Netflix renewed the show for a third season. Show’s renewal was announced via its official Twitter account.
