It has been an extraordinary year for women with as many brilliant performances to be snubbed as there are nominated. I am not sure how far back we would have to reach to find a year like this for the Best Actress category, but after doing this, I am going to find out. The category is bursting with potential nominees, and only five can be nominated. We have two certainties, Emma Stone and Natalie Portman, no one else is assured, not even sentimental favorite Annette Bening.
And the men? There may not be as many great performances from them this year, but what there is are choice performances. Casey Affleck’s work if for the ages, one of the greatest film performances ever given, while Denzel Washington does his best work since Malcolm X.
And despite being late to the party, I liked Martin Scorsese’s challenging ‘Silence’, very much. Here’s hoping the Academy does too, though I suspect there is enough regard for Scorsese to get the film and director into the race.
