HBO’s American-Israeli grim television miniseries, ‘Our Boys’, inspired by real life events, is created by Golden Award winner, Hagai Levi (‘The Affair‘), Joseph Cedar (‘Footnote’) and Tawfik Abu-Wael. The show is about the tragic slaying of the 16-year-old teen, Abu Khdeir, and is narrated in Hebrew- and Arabic-language. Lending deep insights into cognitive dissonance and the perils of racism, tribalism, blood libel, and religious extremism, this beautifully crafted tale makes for an engaging political thriller.

Our Boys Plot: What is it about?
If you delve a little bit into history, you will find it littered with examples of how one act of violence can outrage the whole country. One example of such an incident is the 2014 kidnapping of three teenage Jewish boys in the West Bank. What ensued was an exhaustive manhunt that caused the deaths of five Palestinians and thousands of Israelis launching protests for the boys’ safe return. However, after a few days, the dead bodies of all the three boys, shot dead by Hamas militants, were discovered. Following this, a Palestinian named Mohammed Abu Khdeir’s burnt corpse was also found — a probable case of hate crime. Thus started a true tale of revenge and nation-side mourning, that led to the infamous Israel–Gaza War of 2014.
‘Our Boys‘ chronicles this entire chain of events and what happened afterwards. We meet Mohammed, an Arabian citizen who works in a construction firm. He is planning for his upcoming trip to Istanbul and has to travel the entire country without speaking a word in Arabic — so as to not arouse the fury of the residents. On the other hand, Avishai is an orthodox Jew, who struggles at yeshiva. Both of these youngsters had been brought up in Jerusalem and are boys with dream in their eyes, attempting to fulfill their family’s expectations.
Featuring in the midst of all the action is Simon, a security officer from Shin Bet. He leads the task force trying to prevent more revenge killings after the teens’ abductions. After the discovery of Khdeir’s body, he and his crew implement Stasi-like audio and video surveillance to track down the wrong-doers. He participates in multiple undercover operations along with the alleged perpetrators to find proof and arrest the criminals.
‘Our Boys’ is definitely a tough-to-watch series, primarily because of its sensitive storyline. Moreover, the superb performances by the cast makes you want to cry your heart out. For instance, when Hussein claims that his son has been kidnapped, the cops dismiss him. But once his body is found, they quickly divert it to a case of “honor killing” — something many Americans of color shall relate to. A meticulously conceived foreign drama, ‘Our Boys’ will definitely stay with the audience for a long time after they have watched it.
