‘Our Planet’, the much awaited series for nature and wildlife lovers, first premiered on Netflix on April 5, 2019. The show is a wonderful docu-series that gives an awe-inspiring glimpse into the natural wonders of Earth.  This 8-part nature documentary is created in partnership with World Wide Fund and features Alastair Fothergill, Keith Scholey, and Colin Butfield as the executive producers. Silverback, the company behind BBC’s ‘Planet Earth’ and ‘Blue Planet’, serves as the show’s producer.

Our Planet Cast: Who is in it?

‘Our Planet’ features host and narrator, Sir David Frederick Attenborough, who is one of the most renowned English broadcasters and natural historians. Labeled as a national treasure in Britain, he has worked as a writer and presenter for nine natural history documentary series — also known as the Life Collection, which documents surveys of animal and plant life on Earth. Moreover, he is the only BAFTA winner for programmes created in black and white, color, HD, 3D, as well as 4K.

Here’s a brief overview of Attenborough’s immense contributions to BBC Two. In 1965, he traveled to the depths of the Tanzanian forests to film its elephants in their wild, natural state. In 1969, he developed a three-part series, documenting the rich cultural history of Bali. And in 1971, he embarked on a pioneering Western expedition to a remote New Guinean valley in search of a lost tribe. In fact, he was the mastermind behind changing the entire schedule of the channel to create a vast, diverse repertoire of content, which includes music, arts, entertainment, archaeology, experimental comedy, travel, drama, sport, business, science, and natural history.

Attenborough, through his insightful works, has enabled us to witness the diversity and universality of human existence. His ambitious project, ‘Life on Earth’, uses mindblowing camera, photography, and filming techniques to give a real-time view of animals in their wild habitats. Did you know that he was also the first person to film the Komodo Dragon on ‘Zoo Quest’? What’s more. He also hosted the epic program – ‘The Blue Planet’, which introduces us to the wonders beneath the waters of the deepest oceans. So, we can go on and on. But we think, it’s clear by now, why we are so excited about Attenborough featuring as the narrator for our title under preview, namely, ‘Our Planet’.

Our Planet Plot: What is it about?

‘Our Planet’ adopts the similar, momentous theme of ‘Blue Planet’, which is streaming on the platform currently as well. However, Netflix wanted its own version, and hence, came up with this idea of a documentary that narrates the vivid wonders of our world.

‘Our Planet’ entwines advanced photography methods and filming techniques, to give a look into the Earth’s wilderness and its natural habitats that house unique flora and fauna. This project has been filmed across a time period of four years, spanning the borders of 50 countries, seven continents, and employing over 600 crew members — working tirelessly for 3,500 filming days. The documentary takes you on a visually enticing ride across the length and breadth of the world — including the remote Arctic region,  mysterious deep oceans, African wilderness, and South American forests. It covers a diverse range of habitats such as deserts, seas, and jungles.

Considering its massive scale, the synopsis of this program really sounds spectacular. And of course, no doubt, it provides us with a much-needed distraction from the grim snapshots we see on the news daily. As per Attenborough, “Our Planet will take viewers on a spectacular journey of discovery showcasing the beauty and fragility of our natural world”. He further added, “Today we have become the greatest threat to the health of our home but there’s still time for us to address the challenges we’ve created if we act now. We need the world to pay attention.”

In fact, ‘Our Planet’ is primarily meant for mass entertainment, but it tries to make us aware of rising environmental challenges such as climate change, overfishing, and deforestation. In the last 40 years itself, the population of wild animals has decreased by 50% and biodiversity has declined fast, making these events part of a global catastrophe. However, we still have hope. By creating the required technology and deploying policy initiatives, humans can play a key role in restoring the planet. And this is what this particular show tries to teach its viewers. The documentary, along with its stunning scenes of natural beauty, also gives examples of the last surviving species of animals and the exploitation faced by them through man-made threats. The whole idea behind the show is a call to action: Humans have made this planet a mess and while natural life survives, merely watching that fight for survival unfold makes us a complicit witness. After watching it, viewers will definitely realize the urgency of this situation and understand the importance of taking steps to preserve what is remaining of this precious planet.

Our Planet Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?

All the eight episodes of ‘Our Planet’ landed on Netflix on April 5, 2019 in 190 countries. Witnessing the immense attention that it has received already, we are sure that the show will be renewed for a second season. However, the question is ‘when’? If you see the trend of several of the preceding nature documentaries, you will notice that the filming of the show itself takes at least a year to complete. The announcement for ‘Our Planet’ was made way back in 2015 and it aired in 2019. Therefore, according to our prediction, a season 2 of the show, most likely, shall release sometime in 2021 or 2022.
