How did Pablo Escobar earn his money and wealth?
Born on the 1st of December in 1949 in Columbia to Abel de Jesus Dari Escobar who was a farmer and Hermilda Gaviria, an elementary school teacher as the third of seven kids, Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria later went on to become one of the richest and most powerful men in the United States. He also has the tagline of being one of the most notorious criminals in the world. Brought up in the small town of Medellin, Pablo Escobar stepped into the criminal province at a tender age by ransacking gravestones and reselling them to local smugglers. He later went on to sell counterfeit high school diplomas. He attended the Universidad Autonoma Latinoamericana of Medellin for a short while but dropped out later.
Gradually, Escobar teamed up with Oscar Benel Aguirre and the duo started getting indulged in petty crimes locally like the sale of contraband cigarettes and bogus lottery tickets and also seizing cars on the streets. It was in the year 1970 at the age of 21 that Escobar made his breakthrough crime of abducting a Medellin executive by disguising as his bodyguard and earned a ransom amount of $100,000. Later that year, Pablo clubbed with Alvaro Prieto, a local contraband smuggler in Medellin. By the time he turned 26, he had a bank balance of US $3 million.
By the year 1975, Pablo Escobar became a big name in the smuggling world. He shuttled between countries along the smuggling routes. His prime operation centers were his hometown Columbia and Panama. He later bought 15 bigger airplanes that serviced for his drug trade. In 1976, Pablo Escobar along with few of his other counterparts were arrested and 39 pounds of white paste seized. After a litter of failed attempts to bribe the officers, Escobar finally took the big step and passed an order to murder two of them, following which the case was discarded and Escobar was set free.
The demand for Cocaine soon catapulted in the United States and so did the trade and business of Escobar. He extended his routes to all across the country and even beyond. Escobar along with Carlos Lehder purchased an island Normans Cay on the south coast of Florida to flourish their trade even more effectively. This changed his game and he went on to buy the 7.7 square mile land worth several million dollars and constructed his luxurious mansion that had a private zoo, bullring, and lake inside. His drug network was popularly known as Medellin Cartel and it shipped an estimate of around 15 tons of cocaine per day during its peak time.
Escobar was arrested in 1991 and later eloped and was shot dead on 2 December 1993 within a span of 16 months post absconding. The worth of Escobar’s Miami mansion that was seized post his death was $9,600,000. Escobar also owned a palatial Caribbean getaway with apartments, courtyard, and helipad situated on Isla Grande beside many warehouses and residences.
