The crime drama, ‘Peaky Blinders‘, written by Steven Knight, can be regarded as one of the best television shows that depict the brutal, lively and thriving life of a British gangster post-WWI. With the series’ first season being aired on the television on BBC Two on September 13, 2013, the series quickly gained popularity among various audiences. Directed by Otto Bathurst, the series carried on to receive many accolades, such as best director(fiction) in the BAFTA Television Crafts awards and the Biarritz Best Male Actor award, that went to Cillian Murphy, its enigmatic and charming star. The show’s worldwide popularity has resulted in its placement from BBC2 to BBC1, which is the biggest network in the country, as of now.

The show has been praised for its dominating stylish cinematography and the smooth and ever beautiful performances by the actors. It has been hailed by multiple sources, some in particular being, the Guardian that spoke of the series as a “riveting, fast-paced tale of post-First World War Birmingham gangsters”. The very first season revolves around the protagonist and the life of the show, Thomas Shelby, a decorated war veteran who returns to Birmingham in order to set up a proper business, which he expands by exerting his influence as a gangster.

Peaky Blinders Cast: Who’s in it?

‘Peaky Blinders’ has a talented cast that includes some of the best actors in the business. The cast is lead by Cillian Murphy who plays the role of the patriarch figure of the family, Thomas Shelby. Helen McCrory plays the role of their aunt, Polly Gray, the treasurer of the company. Paul Anderson plays the role of the oldest of Shelby siblings and also the most reckless one, Arthur. Joe Cole plays the role of John, the third brother, who meets his end in the fourth season. Sophie Rundle plays the role of Ada Thorne, the only sister of the Shelbys. The series has also had actors like Sam Neill, Annabelle Wallis, Adrien Brody, Charlotte Riley and Noah Taylor.

In a shocking turn of events, the last season saw the demise of Tom Hardy‘s much loved and feared character Alfie Solomons. Hardy had joined the cast in the second season and since then, his appearance has been a magnetic performance, which even takes away the thunder of the great Tommy Shelby. But the arc of Solomons has come to an end now and there are new faces set to join the series. Sam Claflin, Emmet Scanlan, Anya Taylor-Joy, Brian Gleeson, Daryl McCormack, Andrew Koji, Charlene McKenna, Elliot Cowan, Kate Dickie, Neil Maskell and Cosmo Jarvis have joined the cast for the fifth season. Kate Phillips and Aiden Gillen are also set to reprise their roles.

Peaky Blinders Plot: What’s it about?

‘Peaky Blinders’ follows the story of the Shelby family, led by Tommy Shelby. He works closely with his two brothers and often relies on the wisdom of their aunt, Polly. Throughout the four seasons, the Shelbys have encountered all sorts of enemies and have come out as a winner on the other side, though not without losses. From the police officers to the Russians and the Italian mob, there is nothing Tommy Shelby will not destroy to save his family and his business.

Season four left us hanging with a great number of possibilities. One of them that seems certain to come true is the aggrandization of the Shelby clan’s power with Tommy now assuming official power. As for that ‘direction’, all we know if that they’re hoping that the show will eventually end with the advent of World War Two. While it was initially believed that the story arc would be completed with the fifth season, Steven Knight has assured the fans that the end isn’t so near after all. 1939 will mark the end of the story for the Shelbys, but we have two more seasons before that happens. While waiting for the fifth season might be getting harder by the day, you can rejoice on the fact that we have two more series after that. Contrasting the exponential rise of the Shelby clan in politics will be the degrading mental health of Tommy. It has been brushed on in the previous seasons and had a strong presence in the fourth. Will Tommy find his bearings or will he spiral out of control? Meanwhile, there is the business with Americans, now that Michael has been sent there to expand the business. What trouble will that stir for our favourite gangsters?

Peaky Blinders Season 5 Release Date: When will it premiere?

Peaky Blinders season 4 released on Dec 21, 2017. The fifth season was ordered by the BBC Two team along with the fourth season. Peaky Blinders season 5 is all set to premiere on August 25, 2019 in the UK and October 4, 2019 on Netflix in the US and internationally.

According to various reports, we can be sure that in the fifth season the audiences can expect that the Shelbys will continue their “respectable work” in the dark. It will also set the stage for the rising wave of fascism in the continent and the effects it has on the country, and also on Tommy Shelby’s empire.

Peaky Blinders Trailer

BBC has a reputation for making the fans wait for their favourite series, and something similar seems to be happening for ‘Peaky Blinders’ as well. But the wait is almost over now (hopefully!). Moreover, with the humungous success of the series on the other side of the pond, there have been rumours that a movie spin-off could be underway. Although it is too soon to speculate on any of that, it is still great food for thought. Official photos of the fifth season have been released, but there is no trailer yet. We will update this section as soon as that lands. Meanwhile, you can catch all four seasons of ‘Peaky Blinders’ on BBC and Netflix. Here is a sneak peek at the fourth season to throw you back into the moody era of a deadly family.
