The Golden Globes were held not so long ago but Hollywood showed no signs of fatigue when the red carpet was rolled out for the 43rd People’s Choice Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday, January 18. To quote the host of the evening Joel McHale who uncannily said, ‘it is the only night of the year when Hollywood reacts positively to what the middle of the country thinks’. He does have a point though. It is the only award ceremony where the people have the upper hand as they choose both the nominees and the winners. However the winners they choose have always been a matter of fierce debate year after year. Joel did a fine job as the host as he came on stage with a handful of babies to be perceived as ‘likeable’. Well he can be rest assured that he was far better than Jimmy Fallon’s disastrous turn at the Golden Globes.
The People’s Choice Awards were given in a whopping 64 categories this year ranging from Movies, Music and TV to digital. The list of winners might sound a bit odd but one must keep in mind that it is not your standard film award where a film or TV show is assessed on its quality. Here everything is based on popularity and whose fans voted the most.
Some of the most notable winners this year highlighted the fact that the taste of the average viewers is also undergoing a drastic change. How else would you explain Priyanka Chopra’s victory in the “Favorite Dramatic TV Actress” category for ‘Quantico’ over stalwarts like Viola Davis and Kerry Washington? Or maybe it reflects the rise of the diasporic Indian/Asian community audience in the US to whom Priyanka owes the success of her show ‘Quantico’. Further strengthening the Indian presence at the event was Lilly Singh aka IISuperwomanII who took home the “Favorite YouTube Star” award.
In a year when Hollywood gave us films like ‘Moonlight’ and ‘La La Land’, the people chose ‘Finding Dory’ as their “Favorite Movie” as well as “Favorite Family Movie”. As I warned you earlier this is not your regular awards show. However some sense prevailed when Tom Hanks was chosen as the “Favorite Dramatic Movie Actor” for his role in ‘Sully’. “Deadpool” deservedly took home the “Favorite Action Movie” award while Robert Downey Jr. took home the “Favorite Action Movie Actor” honour for ‘Captain America: Civil War’.
The star of the evening was clearly Ellen DeGeneres who took home three awards and created history by winning her 20th People’s Choice award. Arguably the most deserving winner of the evening was Johnny Depp who took home the “Favorite Movie Icon” award and said in his winning speech that he came only because of his fans who stood by him through thick and thin and sounded rather emotional. The grossly overlooked TV show ‘Bates Motel’ finally got a new lease of life when it was declared the “Favorite Cable TV Drama”, along with favorite cable TV drama Actor and Actress.
We must appreciate the People’s Choice awards for daring to be different and giving the audience a voice because it is them, who buy the tickets, subscribe to online streaming services, pay the cable bills and download the songs. Critical appreciations are well and good but if the stars cannot connect with their fans it is a lost cause. While we are all eagerly waiting for the Oscar nominations to be announced we must also congratulate the winners who have made a place in people’s heart. Bravo!
