Based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, HBO’s ‘Perry Mason‘ follows the story of a private investigator-turned-criminal defense lawyer. Set in the 1930s LA, the show focuses on the kidnapping and death of an infant, carrying the mystery for the entire season. With beautiful backgrounds and a gripping crime, the first season gives a solid origin story to the main character. But now that the season is done and the case is closed, what does it mean for Perry Mason? Here’s everything you should know about the second season of ‘Perry Mason’.
Perry Mason Season 2 Release Date
‘Perry Mason’ Season 1 premiered on HBO on June 21, 2020, and concluded on August 9, 2020. The series was received well critically and managed to garner 8 million viewers for its debut episode, which makes it the most-watched series premiere for HBO in about two years. The rating for the show increased with every episode, which made fans wonder if the series would return for a second season.
Initially, ‘Perry Mason’ had been tagged as a miniseries. However, with such success, HBO turned over the decision and gave a green light to Season 2. HBO programming executive VP Francesca Orsi said in a statement to THR, “It has been an exciting journey to work with the immensely talented team behind Perry Mason. Viewers have relished being transported back in time to 1930’s Los Angeles each week, and we are thrilled to welcome the show back for a second season.” Executive producer Robert Downey Jr, too, confirmed the fate of the series through his Twitter account.

Now that we have cleared the matter of if ‘Perry Mason’ will come back for another run, the question remains for when it will happen. An early green lighting of a project means that its return would be early too. HBO’s shows generally come back around a fixed time of the year. Because ‘Perry Mason’ Season 1 came in June 2020, we expect its second season to be released around the same time next year. Though no official date has been set for it yet, we expect ‘Perry Mason’ Season 2 to release sometime in summer 2021.
Perry Mason Season 2 Cast: Who’s in it?
‘Perry Mason’ stars Matthew Rhys in the titular role. The supporting cast includes Juliet Rylance as Della Street, Chris Chalk as Officer Paul Drake, Shea Whigham as Pete Strickland, Tatiana Maslany as Sister Alice McKeegan, and John Lithgow as Elias Birchard. Stephen Root plays the role of DA Maynard Barnes, Justin Kirk appears as assistant DA Hamilton Burger, and Jefferson Mays as Virgil Sheets.
With Lithgow’s character dead and the storyline of Maslany’s character wrapped up, they probably won’t be returning in the second season. The rest of the cast, however, is expected to reprise their roles. With a new case in the lap of Perry Mason, we also expect more actors to join the cast, either as Mason’s clients or as the villains of the story.
Perry Mason Season 2 Plot: What can it about?
‘Perry Mason’ Season 1 acts as a standalone crime drama where the mystery is resolved in the final episode. In the next season, a new case, once again following a season long trajectory, is expected to be brought on the screen. In the last episode, the entry of a new client, by the name of Eva Griffin, gives a nod to the books by Gardner, and acts a transition of the origin story into the world created by the author. In an interview with TV Line, the creators of the show, Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald, explained their intentions regarding the second season. “We’re usually looking at the novels to use those jumping-off points. We weren’t sure there was going to be a second season or anything, but we knew we wanted to start into those books. So it will be from the books. We’re looking at using a couple of the books in different ways. I guess I’d kind of liken it to the Cumberbatch Sherlock thing, where you can kind of see the DNA of the Arthur Conan Doyle in there,” said Fitzgerald.
