How did Peter Mayhew earn his money and wealth?
Mayhew made his acting debut in 1976 when the producers of the movie Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger read about him in a newspaper article which is about the men with very large feet, and because of his large feet, he was cast in the role of the minotaur. When producing his first Star Wars film, producer George Lucas required a tall actor who could fit in the role of the alien Chewbacca. Originally he had cast 6-foot-6-inch tall bodybuilder David Prowse, but Prowse wanted to play the role of Darth Vader. This led Lucas to cast Mayhew for the role, who was working as an orderly. Mayhew got all the recognition and fame from this role and he was identified with the name of Chewbacca. He won many awards for the role.
Peter has played the role of Chewbacca in five Star Wars films: the original trilogy, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In 1978, He played the role in the television film Star Wars Holiday Special and performed on The Muppet Show. Mayhew also delivered dialogue for the Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 3 finale “Wookiee Hunt” episode. Mayhew also did many commercials and made his availability in the hospital for sick children. He has also made several appearances as Chewbacca in the real world. Mayhew as Chewbacca was privileged with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 at the MTV Film Awards. He was also honored at the launch of the new PlayStation Portable where he dressed as Chewbacca and released the new version of PSP slim.
Peter has also made many other appearances without the costume of Chewbecca. He was invited on NBC’s Identity, where his individuality was based on the fact that he played Chewbacca in Star Wars and was a frequent guest in the early days of Slice of SciFi. Mayhew retired from the role of Chewbacca after suffering from health issues. His role was replaced by the Joonas Suotamo.
Besides Star Wars, He also played the characters in movies like Terror, released in 1978, Yesterday Was a Lie and provided the voice in the English version of Dragon Ball GT: A Hero’s Legacy. Mayhew has written two books: Growing Up Giant and My Favorite Giant, which are based on his Gigantism.
He married Angie Luker in 1999, who is a business owner. In 2013, Mayhew underwent Knee replacement surgery. Currently, he resides in Texas.
