‘Power’ is an American crime drama that airs on Starz. It tells the story of a drug dealer known by the nickname ‘Ghost’. However, the individual wants to leave the life of crime in order to go back to his legitimate life as a nightclub owner. Set and filmed in New York City, the show explores how he must balance his two lives, as he attempts to avoid police capture. Adding troubles to his personal life is the fact that his marriage is crumbling.

When it released, the show immediately gained acclaim for the pacing of the narrative, the characterization as well as the atmosphere; the writing and direction were also praised. Naturally, now you must be wondering where you can see it. Well, we are here to tell you that but first, let us walk you through the plot of the show.

What is Power About?

The story of ‘Power’ follows James “Ghost” St. Patrick, a wealthy nightclub owner in New York who caters to the elite people of the city. However, he has a double life as a drug kingpin. Intoxicated with power, we see Ghost struggling to stay on top of the situation as the pitfalls and perils are highlighted by the show. Mainly, James’ problem comes from the fact that he has to choose between two lives. Each option seems to have its own perks. While James’ partner naturally wants him to stay in the drug business, James sees the evident advantage in turning it all in, to spend time with his wife in his classy New York home. Complicating matters is the fact that the man still has feelings for his high school crush, who is now working for the government and cracking down on drug dealers.

Ghost’s life becomes increasingly complicated over the seasons as his wife’s spending habits begin troubling him. Compounding his problems is the fact that no one apart from him sees the nightclub as anything more than a front to launder money. That being said, the characters do not seem to be too compelling right off the bat. In fact, in the initial seasons, you might not end up siding with any of the characters. However, as the series goes on and you realize that no one is safe in the volatile world of drug dealing, you begin to side with the characters a little more. ‘Power’ thrives on the complexity of emotions that the key characters develop through their interactions with each other. When violence, sex and the glamorous nightlife of New York, with all its perils, are added to the mix, you get a show that is as heady and nearly unputdownable as ‘Power’.

It is understandable that ‘Power’ borrows from a rich history of mob tales and many of the themes you encounter in the series have been explored before. However, with a dash of originality, the series manages to explore these themes in a new light, heightening our appreciation for the events that unfurl in the life of James ‘Ghost’ St. Patrick.

Is Power on Netflix?

Netflix has an amazing collection of movies and television shows that sets it apart as a premier content provider. Subscribers cannot find ‘Power’ on the platform, unfortunately. However, that is no cause for concern. If you want to watch a crime drama, we recommend ‘Breaking Bad‘. Vince Gilligan’s masterpiece is often considered to be one of the finest shows ever made. The themes explored are very similar to ‘Power’. You have a high school chemistry teacher leading a double life as a meth kingpin in Alberquerque after he is diagnosed with cancer.

However, unlike the protagonist of ‘Power’, who tries to get out of the criminal life, Walter White, the protagonist of ‘Breaking Bad’, finds himself deeply entrenched in the criminal lifestyle as the seasons progress. The threat of law enforcement is present in both shows, especially in ‘Breaking Bad’, since Walter’s brother-in-law is a DEA agent who has been sniffing around his case for a long time. Going by the name of Heisenberg, Walter, like Ghost, finds that the life of crime does not offer any escape. Starting off as a black comedy, ‘Breaking Bad’ steadily heads towards being a tragedy of epic proportions as the seasons progress. If you like ‘Power’, then ‘Breaking Bad’ is the perfect substitute that you will love.

Is Power on Hulu?

Hulu has a fantastic collection of movies and television shows that the platform keeps making smart additions to, in order to cater to a diverse range of tastes of a growing audience, as well as to stay ahead of the competition. Luckily for the subscribers, ‘Power’ is available for streaming on the platform. However, there is one caveat: you have to add Starz to your existing subscription pack at $8.99 per month. Check it out here.

Is Power on Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime has an enviable collection of movies and television shows that can perhaps only be bested by Netflix. However, in this case, Prime seems to have beaten its competitors. Subscribers are in luck since you can stream and watch ‘Power’ on the platform. However, you need to add the Starz pack for $8.99 per month, first. Check it out here.

Where Can I Stream Power Online?

No subscriptions to Hulu or Amazon Prime? No problem. You can still stream ‘Power’ online. Head over to Starz and you can stream the show.

Where Can I Watch Power Online For Free?

Freeloaders are in luck since you can use both Hulu and Amazon Prime, provided you have subscriptions, and use the free trial period offered by Starz to watch ‘Power’. In case you do not have subscriptions to these platforms, you can use Starz’s free trial period on their own platform and stream the show. However, we would like to urge readers to pay for all the art they consume.
