‘Preacher’ is the live-action adaptation of the eponymous Garth Ennis comics, which debuted in May 2016 on AMC. And since its premiere, the show has come a long way. The story had begun by introducing us to the smoker and extremely alcoholic Jesse Custer who is suddenly blessed with unmatched power during a period of crisis. In order to understand his new gift, he sets off on a quest to find God, accompanied by his former flame Tulip, and vampire buddy, Cassidy.

Across the four seasons that have aired to date, we have seen Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy leaving their town Annville far behind, going after God, discovering the Grail, meeting the Messiah and Jesus, entering Hell, and finally, facing an apocalypse. The fourth edition ended on an explosive note, with God getting killed, literally! So does this mean that the series has ended? Let’s find out.

Preacher Season 5 Release Date: Renewed or Canceled?

‘Preacher’ season 4 premiered on August 4, 2019, on AMC. It ended with its 10th episode on September 29, 2019. When the creators announced that show’s return with its fourth edition, they also confirmed that season 4 would be the final installment from the series. EP Seth Rogen officially posted about the series’ end on his Instagram handle. He wrote: “The fourth and final season of Preacher is coming. It’s been a wild ride. Thank you all.”

So, yes, officially, as of now, ‘Preacher’ season 5 stands canceled. But since the show has amassed a massive fan following over the years, audiences are still curious if there is any possibility of a revival. After all, recent years have seen several reboots, currently in the works, all thanks to the onset of the streaming platform wars. However, sadly, it is highly unlikely that ‘Preacher’ will ever be revived — at least not in its current rendition.

First up, although the creators did not give a proper explanation for the show’s cancellation, it is safe to assume that falling ratings were a leading contributor. As per Nielsen, seasons 1 and 2 drew strong numbers. But the figures started decreasing after season 3’s premiere. And the fourth outing recorded the maximum decline in viewerships. Another factor to be noted here is the move of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg from Sony to Lionsgate. The pair’s production company had signed a huge deal with a new home just a couple of days before season 4’s announcement.

Finally, season 4’s finale exhausts the original source material. Therefore, the lead characters do not have anything to pursue even if we are given the fifth edition. All factors considered, ‘Preacher’ season 5 is not happening! But it is still likely that a new adaptation can happen in the coming years. The ‘Preacher’ comics are a classic and have a huge fan base. So, if another channel or production team decides to give a complete makeover to the story — in the form of a movie or a tv series — we might get to see a different version of this tale, in a completely new reincarnation!
