Detective shows and comedy-dramas do seem like a weird combination, but they are wonderfully blended in ‘Psych’, a series created by Steve Franks. The plot follows a young crime consultant who works for the Santa Barbara Police Department. As a result of his heightened observational skills and impressive eidetic memory, he manages to convince people that he solves crimes using psychic powers. The other characters in the show are either people in the consultant’s life or those working with him at the police department.
While ‘Psych’ was airing, it received immense praise and developed a strong fan following. The number of these fans have only grown after the show was taken off the air. There is a movie based on the show as well, and another one is slated to come out in 2020, making this the best time to stream and familiarize yourself with the show. What is Psych About?
‘Psych’ usually begins with a cold open that is a flashback to Shawn and Gus’ childhoods. Shawn is the crime consultant and Gus is his childhood friend and business partner. The flashbacks show them being taught a lesson by Shawn’s father, a young Henry Spencer. The man wishes that his son would grow up to be a law enforcement officer like him. To this end, as a child, Shawn was taught by Henry to sharpen his skills of observation and deduction. Henry would use challenges and games to test him. The flashbacks usually set the theme for the upcoming episode and Henry’s lessons play a part in the episode’s climax.
Shawn’s troubles start when he begins to gain a reputation as a psychic. Having followed criminal cases on the news, he calls in tips which help the police close the cases. As a result, the police start to grow suspicious of this individual who happens to have so much insight into the crimes. They conclude that the kind of knowledge Shawn has could only come from someone who committed the crimes and they arrest him as a suspect. To avoid prison, Shawn once again uses his skills to convince the cops that he is a psychic. The chief issues an ultimatum that if his powers turn out to be phony, he will be prosecuted.
Forced to keep up the act, Shawn starts his own psychic detective agency called Psych. He becomes an outside consultant for the police. Since he pretends to be a psychic, the show’s comedy arises from Shawn’s eccentric behavior when he stumbles upon a clue but has to credit it to his hunches. Shawn teams up with Gus, a pharmaceutical sales representative and his lifelong friend. The former loves teasing the latter as they drive around in their vehicle solving crimes.
Coming to the police force, obviously, there are believers and naysayers. The head detective respects Shawn’s crime-solving abilities but does not believe in his psychic powers. In fact, Shawn’s antics often infuriates the individual. However, the chief and a junior detective are far more inclined to believe in Shawn’s powers. The chief remains mum on the subject but is always ready to give Shawn some extra leeway that he might need to solve the case. While Shawn somewhat ends up following in his father’s footsteps, we see that he shares a tough relationship with Henry, who reluctantly ends up helping Shawn on some occasions.
Overall, the series is known for the kind of screwball comedy and deadpan delivery that it excels in. It is a smart and funny crime show that carefully avoids much of the grittiness that we have come to expect from such shows on television.
