Rafael Nadal is a professional tennis player from Spain. He is currently the world number one tennis player in men’s singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He was born as Rafael Nadal Parera on June 3, 1986, in Manacor, Balearic Islands, Spain to Sebastian and Ana Maria Parera. He grew up with a younger sister, Maria Isabel. He was introduced to tennis as a three-year-old as his Uncle, Toni Nadal recognized a natural talent in him. He won the under-12 regional tennis championship at the age of 8 which made his Uncle Toni further intensify his tennis training. He was equally good at playing football at that time. By the time he turned 12 years old, he had won both the European and Spanish tennis titles in his age group. His father made him choose between tennis and football as his parents did not want his school work to deteriorate. He chose tennis. The Spanish federation requested Nadal when he was 14 to move from Mallorca to Barcelona so that we could continue his tennis training. He refused to move and thus received lesser financial support from the federation. His father took care of all his tennis costs. He defeated former Grand Slam tournament champion Pat Cash at a clay-court exhibition match when he was 15 years old.

Nadal turned professional when he was 15 years old and as world No. 762, Nadal won his first ATP match in which he defeated Ramon Delgado. His stellar performance on the court helped him win the ATP Newcomer of the Year Award in 2003. He helped Spain win the Davis Cup final by defeating the United States. He started winning many tournaments such as the Rome Masters and Monte Carlo Masters in 2005. He became the second male player to win the French Open on his first attempt in 2005. He is the only teenager to win a Grand Slam title since Pete Sampras in 1990.

His world ranking improved and he became world No. 3. Nadal has a habit of biting the trophies he won. He continued to play more matches as well as win them as he was on a winning streak. He won his second French Open in 2006 and 2007. He won his first Olympic gold when he beat Fernando Gonzalez of Chile at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He won his second Olympic gold medal when he partnered with Marc Lopez to win the men’s doubles event at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
