Will There be a Reef Break Season 2?

Movies and shows with a female protagonist, as rare they might be, have always had something different to offer. Whether she is a lone hunter, an athletic warrior, a strong woman with a passion for justice, an avenger with a traumatic past, a wronged lover on a quest for revenge, or a con artist, we simply cannot get enough! Now, if this character is dazzlingly hot and sexy, and comes with a not-so-clean past, it makes her even more irresistible. Well, delving further into these elements is ABC series, Reef Break.

Sexy, steamy, and full of action, ‘Reef Break’ is a French-American crime drama, produced by ABC Studios International for the French broadcaster M6. It is an amazing mix of crime, sex, surf, beaches, and sunshine.

Season 1 of the show premiered as a part of ABC’s 2019 summer schedule in June 2019. ABC president Channing Dungey was particularly elated in bringing the show to their audience. “We’re thrilled to add this new series fronted by Poppy Montgomery to our summer 2019 slate. It’s an exhilarating and suspenseful ride set against some of the most beautiful locations,” he said.

‘Reef Break’ credits Montgomery as the creator alongside Ken Sanzel. After its launch, it opened to weak reviews, garnering an average 33% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So, is there any chance of a ‘Reef Break’ season 2? Let’s find out.

Reef Break Season 2: Renewed or Cancelled?

‘Reef Break’ season 1 premiered on June 20, 2019, on ABC  and came to an end on September 13, 2019, after 13 episodes.

With a diverse cast, the story was expected to engage audiences around the world. However, the plan did not go as expected. The first season failed to gather a significant audience or critical acclaim and Variety described it as: “Unmoored from reason or shame and buoyed by its willingness to be as silly as it wants to be, the new ABC drama “Reef Break” is a wildly unserious piece of television. In that, it’s a bit refreshing — a network series that embraces its network-iness, that has absolutely no ambition beyond evoking a smile…The only thing deep about “Reef Break” is its silliness. Yet splashing in the shallows can, for those in the right temperament and in need of brain-off summer fare, have its pleasures too.”

The inaugural season attracted less than 2 million weekly total viewers and had a low 0.31 demo rating — being ranked as the least-viewed series among all ABC 2019-summertime shows. As a result, ABC decided to pull its plug on the title. Hence, ‘Reef Break’ season 2 stands cancelled and ABC won’t be adding any more new episodes to the show in the near (or far) future.

Reef Break Cast: Who is in it?

Leading the cast of ‘Reef Break’ is Poppy Montgomery as Cat Chambers. She is best known for her portrayal of FBI agent Samantha Spade in CBS’s acclaimed show, ‘Without a Trace’. She has also featured on the A&E series, ‘Unforgettable’, where she enacts the character of detective Carrie Wells. Her other acting credits include ‘Glory Days’ and ‘Relativity’. Melissa Bonne plays the role of Ana DuMont. She is widely recognized for her appearances in ‘Harrow‘, ‘Pulse‘ and ‘Home and Away’. Ray Stevenson, who portrays the character of Jake, has featured on ‘Thor’, ‘The Three Musketeers’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’, and ‘Kill the Irishman’.

Desmond Chiam, who has acted in ‘Now Apocalypse‘, stars as Wyatt Cole. Tamala Shelton plays Petra and her previous acting credits include her portrayals of Alinta in seasons 1 and 2 of the critically acclaimed series ‘Cleverman’, Morgan in ‘Location Scouts’, and the short film, ‘Scout and Radio Karate’s True Story’.

Reef Break Plot: What is it about?

‘Reef Break’ introduces us to Cat Chambers, who was previously a thief but is now employed as a “fixer” for the governor. She is simply irresistible, reckless, and impulsive, and embarks on multiple racy, fast-paced adventures in and around the stunning and seductive paradise of Pacific Island. Her past experiences have endowed her with an incredible gift of understanding crime and criminals, by using her sharp instincts.

However, her new avatar and reappearance bring up several of her old friends, enemies, and lovers to the forefront. They interfere in her already chaotic life in many instances. Those include her ex-hubby cum FBI agent, her crime boss, who is currently in prison, and a lover who is a police detective. Every episode is a mix of thrilling adventures and spectacular locations, with Cat increasingly becoming confused between the boundaries of her personal and professional lives.

Season 1 ends with Cat Chambers being on the run fearing both the law and Doug O’Casey. The future looks uncertain as Cat tries to clear her name. Season 2 was expected to carry her story further but that’s not happening anytime soon. We guess, we have to be satisfied with whatever incomplete conclusion the first season had to offer to its fans.
