How did Richard Petty earn his money and wealth?

Richard Lee Petty was born July 2 in 1937 in Level Cross, Randolph County, North Carolina, the U.S. to parents Elizabeth and Lee Arnold Petty who also was a NASCAR driver as well as an elder brother of famous NASCAR personality Maurice Petty. He had also won NASCAR champion three times. Richard Petty is nicknamed as “The King” and “ the Randleman Rocket”. In 1958, Petty married Lynda Owens who passed away in 2014 after being diagnosed with cancer. They have four children.

He began his NASCAR career when he was 21-year old on July 18, 1958. He only raced for NASCAR Winston Cup Series and the Strictly Stock/Grand National Era. He is the owner and operator of Richard Petty Motorsports. In 1965, he crashed his new compact Barracuda with the Hemi installed in it, in which 6-year-old boy was killed and 7 people were injured as well.he faced lawsuits and had to shell out $1 million.

1967 has been the most successful year in Richard Petty’s career as he won 27 of his 48 races.

He also won his second Grand National Championship in the same year and hence was nicknamed “the King”.In 1971 he won his third Daytona and 20 more races and became the first racer to earn more than $1 million in the racing career. He also won 4th NASCAR Cup Series championship.in 1975 he won “world 600” for the first time. in 1979 and 1981 he won two more Daytona. At the Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway in 1984, he won his 200th race. In 1995, after his retirement, he joins the television as a color commentator but wasn’t there for long. He also has been lucky in his racing career where he survived three major crashes.

He won a number of medals and awards including the following: he was named as Grand National Series Rookie of the Year in 1959, NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver in eight years: 1962, 1964, 1968, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, he also was inducted in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1989,  in International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1997 , in NASCAR Hall of Fame In 2010 and in Diecast Hall of Fame in 2011 and was Named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.
