Rick and Morty’ is an adult animated science fiction sitcom that follows the misadventures of the grandfather and grandson duo, Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith. Rick is an eccentric teleporting scientist, who along with his kind-hearted and clumsy grandson, experiences some of the weirdest and coolest things across the multiverse. Ever since the show premiered on December 2, 2013, it has become a pop culture sensation.

Created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, this Emmy-winning series is specifically lauded for its whacky storyline, simplistic yet colorful animation, and the performances of the voice actors. The loyal fans have waited patiently for each season and must be curious to know when and what to expect in season 5. Here is all the information we have gathered!

Rick and Morty Season 5 Release Date

‘Rick and Morty’ season 4 premiered on November 10, 2019, on Adult Swim – the programming block of Cartoon Network – with the last episode wrapping up the season on May 31, 2020. Season 4 comprises ten episodes with a running time of 22 minutes. In May 2018, Adult Swim ordered 70 episodes over an unspecified number of seasons.

When season 4 was renewed, Dan Harmon said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, that fans would never have to wait that long again, referring to the two-year-long wait between the third and fourth season. Harmon said, “We’re literally writing season 5 while finishing season 4 just to force ourselves to commit to a certain schedule.”

He added, “Not to get anyone’s hopes up, but it is structured into our deal that if we’re going strong and fast there are options to deliver more episodes at a time.” Considering the delays in production and hurdles that come with studio work done from home, it is reasonable to expect ‘Rick and Morty’ season 5 to premiere sometime in the summer of 2021 on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.

Rick and Morty Season 5 Cast: Who is in it?

Justin Roiland voices both the main characters, Rick and Morty. Sarah Chalke lends her voice to Beth Smith, Ricky’s daughter, and Morty’s mother. Chris Parnell voices Jerry Smith, Morty’s father, who is not too impressed by Rick’s influence over the family. Spencer Grammer voices Summer Smith, Morty’s sister, who is concerned about her social status amongst her peers but also joins Rick and Morty in some of their adventures.

Other voice cast members include Kari Wahlgren as Jessica/Diane Sanchez/Rick’s computer, Dan Harmon as Bird Person/Phoenix Person/Acid Man/Heistotron/Randotron. Cassie Steele brings Tammy to life, who is a recurring villain in the series. All the cast members will return for season 5, playing a few additional roles apart from their regular ones. However, there may be a few exceptions and additions in the voice cast.

Rick and Morty Season 5 Plot: What can it be About?

The finale of season 4 sees two versions of Beth. It is revealed that both of them are led to believe that they are the real Beth. Tired of Rick’s manipulation, the two couldn’t care to find out the truth about themselves. We learn that Rick regrets mixing up their identities, as he ends up failing them both in order to have everything – a daughter who could have her own adventures and a daughter who stays close to give him validation.

We see Rick at his most vulnerable as he falls in the eyes of the family and requires being rescued multiple times. Phoenix Person, the manipulated and mechanized version of Bird Person, attacks Rick. Seeing him like this upsets him because he tries to be a good friend to Bird Person, despite his shortcomings in the Smith family.

In season 5, Beth’s two versions may be dealt with, and how the family feels about Rick could be a foundation to build the upcoming storyline. Fans can expect to see further development in the emotional side of Rick’s character, rather than just the person who never learns from his mistakes. The co-creators of the series have also shown interest in working with Kanye West, who we may see in one of the episodes in Season 5.
