How did RuPaul earn his money and wealth?
RuPaul is a multifaceted person who is not only a drag queen but also an actor, singer, songwriter, model, TV personality and an author. He was born RuPaul Andre Charles on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California. He moved to Atlanta when he was 15 years old with his sister who studied performing arts. During the 1980’s he struggled to make a mark as a musician as well as a filmmaker. He also performed as a bar dancer at the Celebrity Club and performed with his band, “Wee Wee Pole” at the Club. He was part of the video as a dancer in “Love Shack” by The B-52’s which led brought him much exposure and publicity.
RuPaul in the 1990’s performed in the gender bender-style in the Georgia club scene where he did solo acts as well as collaborations with other bands. He has been a part of “Wigstock”, a drag festival and has also appeared in the documentary “Wigstock: The Movie”. RuPaul released his dance/house album “Supermodel of the World” in 1993. It included the hit dance track “Supermodel (You Better Work). Since grunge and rap were popular during the time of the release of the album, the music video was an unexpected hit. It even peaked at number 2 in the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. He enjoyed two number 1 songs in the Billboard after the release of “Back to My Roots” and “A Shade Shady (Now Prance)”.
RuPaul has released many albums since his first album. His second album “Foxy Lady” was released in 1993 and it included the hit single “Snapshot” which peaked at number 4 in the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. His next album “Ho Ho Ho” was released in 1997 as a Christmas album. His fourth album “Red Hot” was released in 2004 and singles such as “Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous”, “WorkOut” and “People are People”. His next album “ReWorked” was released in 2006 and contained remixes and reworked songs from his previous albums as well as new recordings. His next album “Champion” (2009) peaked at number 12 while “Glamazon” (2011) peaked at number 11 in the Billboard charts.
RuPaul produced a reality TV game show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in 2009 which was aired on Logo. The show selected “America’s next drag superstar” from amongst the drag participants. RuPaul and a panel of judges decided who would be America’s next drag superstar. The show has been on the air since 2009 and in 2012 a spin-off “RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars” was premiered after much fan demand. RuPaul started his own talk show “The RuPaul Show” on VH1 in 1996. He interviewed celebrity guests and musical acts along with his co-host Michelle Visage. The show has had guests such as Nirvana, Diana Ross, Pat Benatar, Duran Duran, Bow Wow Wow, Bea Arthur, Mary J. Blige, Cyndi Lauper, Dionne Warwick, Beenie Man, Olivia Newton-John, Pete Burns, Beenie Man and the Backstreet Boys. RuPaul and Michelle have also co-hosted on WKTU radio.
RuPaul became a model for MAC Cosmetics and several billboards featured him in full drag. RuPaul has written his autobiography titled “Lettin’ It All Hang Out” in 1995. He promoted the book with a guest appearance on ABC’s “All My Children”. RuPaul is one of the most commercially successful drag queens in America.
