RuPaul’s Drag Race Plot: What is it about?
‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ derives its title from both the concepts of drag queens and drag racing. Each episode, since its debut in 2009, begins with an online announcement of casting calls. Interested applicants, who can be anyone aged above 21 years, submit audition tapes in high hopes of making an appearance on the famed platform. Initially, there are 15 (the number may vary from season to season) contestants at the start of the season. The format employs the process of progressive elimination to evict participants, thereby, cutting down the number to the final three or four finalists.
A typical run of challenges comprises a mini-challenge, a main challenge, a runway walk, the judging panel, a lip sync battle, and the elimination of a contestant. Of course, the creators, in order to avoid monotony, introduce exceptions and twists from time to time, such as double-eliminations, zero eliminations, disqualification, or eviction of a candidate because of an injury.
‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 11 premiered on February 28, 2019, on VH1. It featured 15 drag queens — 14 new competitors and one returning participant from season 10, namely Vanessa Vanjie Mateo. The final cast announcements were made on January 24, 2019. Hosted by Aquaria and Adam Rippon, its winner was Yvie Oddly while Brooke Lynn Hytes was the runner-up. Oddly not only received the coveted title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” but she also got to take home one year’s supply of Anastasia Beverly Hills cosmetics and a grand cash prize of $100,000.
As far as its reception is concerned, ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ has received generally favorable reviews from viewers and critics alike. Since it kind of entwines the fashion design elements of ‘Project Runway‘ with the modeling prowess of ‘America’s Next Top Model‘, it brings us the best of both worlds. Giving an inside glimpse into the performance art world of drag queens, it attempts to highlight the hard work, determination, and talent that goes into the making of the perfect drag queen. Hence, by bringing together nerve, charisma, and flair, this Thursday show manages to attract so many viewers every weekday.
