‘Schitt’s Creek’ is a Canadian sitcom that follows the lives of the wealthy Rose family, comprising Johnny and Moira Rose, and their adult children David and Alexis, when they lose their fortune after being defrauded by their business manager. With their fortune gone, the Rose family is forced to rebuild their lives in the titular town of Schitt’s Creek.

Created by Eugene Levy and Daniel Levy, the show airs on CBC Television in Canada and on Pop TV in the US. Over the past few years, it has made quite a name for itself. Season 1 of the show, comprising 13 episodes, first made its way to viewers’ screens on January 13, 2015, but failed to make an impression among television critics. However, despite its unimpressive start, the show was renewed for a second season, which premiered on January 12, 2016. Season 2 of ‘Schitt’s Creek’, however, blew critics away, and since then, the show has seen five seasons air.

Now, as fans await news about Season 6 and the future of the show, it has been confirmed by the show-makers that ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Season 6 will be the last we see of the Rose family and the eponymous town. Here’s everything we know about the final season.

Schitt’s Creek Cast: Who is in it?

In the show, the members of the Rose family are the primary characters. Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara star as the two elder members of the Rose family, Johnny and Moira, respectively, while their adult children, David and Alexis, are played by Dan Levy and Annie Murphy, respectively.

Apart from the Rose family, Emily Hampshire plays the role of a Schitt’s Creek motel clerk who later goes on to become the hotel’s owner. Chris Elliott plays the role of Roland Schitt, the titular town’s mayor, and Jennifer Robertson plays the role of his wife, Jocelyn Schitt. Further, Sarah Levy plays the role of Twyla Sands, a cafe waitress, and Dustin Milligan plays Ted Mullens, the love interest of Alexis.

Leaving out these main characters, there are several other minor and episodic characters who appear and make recurring appearances throughout the show.

It has already been confirmed that all the key players will be reprising their roles in season 6.

Schitt’s Creek Plot: What is it about?

‘Schitt’s Creek’ is…well, set in Schitt’s Creek, and follows the filthy-rich Rose family after they are left high and dry by their business manager. Left with no assets, the Rose family is forced to move to their sole remaining asset – the sleepy town of Schitt’s Creek, which they had bought years ago in 1991 on their son’s birthday as a joke. Upon reaching Schitt’s Creek, the Roses move into two adjacent rooms of a run-down motel, and from their on begins a new chapter of their life.

After moving to the town, the family – video store magnate Johnny, former soap opera actress Moira, and their pampered adult children, David and Alexis – has to change their ways and rebuild their lives. In the town, however, the high-handed ways of the Rose family do not work, and they are often forced to rethink their habits and their behavior as they deal with the good-intentioned, unsophisticated town folk.

When the Roses move into town, they are portrayed as mean, selfish, manipulative and highly privileged people who have a condescending attitude towards common people. However, as the show progresses, the Roses evolve as characters and this gives a nice progression to the sitcom, which otherwise takes place in a familiar theme of city people to the countryside.

Over the course of the seasons, we see the once haughty Roses learning from experience, showing remorse, and really evolving on both an emotional and a humanist plane. This transformation, however, is filled with sophisticated, yet relatable and hilarious humor, and much drama. The result is that ‘Schitt’s Creek’ is a great sitcom that traces the evolution of its primary characters the effects of their evolution on their immediate surroundings.

In season 5, we follow Moira as she gets her hand on a huge film gig, Stevie becomes a part of the production crew of a classic musical Cabaret, Ted and Alexis continue with their relationship, and Patrick proposes to David. The story might go anywhere from here but Eugene and Dan Levy had promised that they would give a befitting end to the show. We might also see the much-awaited Patrick and David’s wedding since Dan Levy had teased that “We have a couple of really nice big ensemble scenes this year.”

Schitt’s Creek Season 6 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘Schitt’s Creek’ Season 5 premiered on January 8, 2019, on Pop and CBC. After airing for 14 episodes, it wrapped up on April 9, 2019.

The show was soon renewed for a sixth season, which, unfortunately, is going to be its last. Daniel Levy confirmed the news saying: “I’ve always known how the show was going to end. I’ve always seen every season of our show as a chapter in the story of this family’s life, and we have reached our inevitable conclusion in that story, so it was the right time and it was something that I had been building to for five seasons.”

The last season was announced via a teaser on September 17, 2019, captioned “tick-tock…”. The creators have also announced a release date. ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Season 6 will premiere on January 7, 2020, on both Pop and CBC. It will consist of 14 episodes and is expected to wrap up in April 2020.
