‘Shameless’ is an American comedy-drama television series that airs on Showtime. Developed by John Wells, the show is an adaptation of a long-running award-winning British comedy-drama series of the same name by Paul Abbott that ran from 2004 to 2013. While the original show was based in Manchester, this adaptation focuses on the impoverished Irish-American family of the Gallaghers as they navigate life in South Side of Chicago.
Interestingly, John Wells, who is known for being the showrunner of popular shows such as ‘ER’, ‘Third Watch’, and the later years of ‘The West Wing’, optioned the rights to the American version of ‘Shameless’ six years before Season 1 actually premiered on January 9, 2011. While Season 1 did not receive an outstanding response from television critics, it immediately struck a chord with viewers. Since then, ‘Shameless’ has seen a whopping nine seasons air, with each season receiving critical acclaim. Now, in what comes as great news for fans of the show, Showtime has announced that ‘Shameless’ will be making a comeback with a tenth season. Here’s everything we know about Shameless season 10 thus far.
Shameless Cast: Who is in it?
As mentioned earlier, ‘Shameless’ revolves around the working-class Irish-American Gallagher family who move from the bleak industrial city of Manchester to Chicago.
Playing the role of the Gallagher family patriarch, Frank Gallagher, is none other than ‘Fargo’ star and Emmy-winning actor William H. Macy. The eldest sibling among the Gallagher children, Fiona Gallagher, is played by Golden Globe nominee and ‘Mystic River’ star, Emmy Rossum. The rest of the Gallagher children, Lip, Ian, Debbie, Carl, and Liam, are played by Jeremy Allen White, Cameron Monaghan, Emma Kenney, Ethan Cutkosky, and Christian Isaiah (earlier by Brenden Sims), respectively.
Other cast members who enjoy significant screen time include Chloe Webb as Frank’s bipolar ex-wife Monica Gallagher, Shanola Hampton as Veronica Fisher, Steve Howey as Kevin Ball, and Michael Patrick McGill as Tommy.
There are dozens of other characters who make recurring and episodic appearances throughout the show, and you can look up the full cast of the show, if you’re interested.
In Season 10, most of the aforementioned cast members are expected to return and reprise their roles. However, Emmy Rossum will not be returning in Season 10, as Fiona’s character is taking flight in Season 9. Commenting on her departure, 32-year-old Rossum told Entertainment Weekly, “I was 23 when the show started and it’s been pretty remarkable the confidence that it’s given me. It’s been a long, wonderful journey and I’m so close to my Gallagher family that to walk away is quite bittersweet, but it did feel like it was time for the character to spread her wings and that there was less need for her. I never want something to just feel like a job and so I’m leaving while I still love it.”
Shameless Plot: What is it about?
Much like the original British show, ‘Shameless’ follows the lives of the rather dysfunctional Gallagher family after they move to Chicago. The patriarch, Frank, is portrayed as a drunk, single father who spends his days at the bottom of a bottle, looking for raucous celebrations and misadventures. Left with no mother and a virtually absent father, the responsibility of raising the Gallagher children is taken up by the eldest sibling Fiona, who manages both her siblings and her sex life. Each episode of the show features on one crazy situations that at least one of the Gallaghers find themselves in, and the show chronicles their lives as they move from one misadventure to the next.
The show, in particular, explores the effect of Frank’s alcoholism on his family, while also exploring the linkages between alcoholism and extreme poverty. Yet, while it addresses such serious themes, it does so in a twisted, hilarious manner, and and the show is replete with obscene cursing, drug use, casual sex, alcohol abuse, hard-hitting blunt humor, and familial love. All of the above is brought to life by brilliant performances from William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum, while the other cast members put in solid performances too.
Thus, it does not come as a surprise that ‘Shameless’ is a hit among critics – it has everything from brilliant acting, to great dialogue, to laugh-out-loud moments, all while tackling with the grave issue of alcoholism. Several seasons of ‘Shameless’ has perfect scores of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the show, overall, enjoys a brilliant score of 90%. Viewers, too, have loved every but of the show, and it enjoys a stellar overall rating of 8.7/10 on IMDb, after over 167,000 votes.
Shameless Season 10 Release Date: When will it premiere?
