There exist an abundance of sitcoms out there, but only a handful come close to the brilliance of ‘Silicon Valley’. Created by Mike Judge, John Altschuler, and Dave Krinsky, and aired on HBO, the show follows the lives of five young men from the iconic Silicon Valley, whose lives change after they found a start-up. While the show’s flavour of comedy is petty similar to other legendary sitcoms like ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘The Office’, the show still manages to be a breath of fresh air owing to its unique characters and its original take on the dark side of the Silicon Valley.
Season 1 of‘ Silicon Valley’ first made its way to viewers’ screens on April 6, 2014. Upon release, Season 1 immediately created an impact among viewers and critics alike, prompting HBO to renew the show for another season. Since then, the show has seen five successful seasons air, and fans are now waiting for the release of Season 6.
Silicon Valley Cast: Who’s in it?
In the show, Thomas Middleditch stars as Richard Hendricks, a programmer who builds an app (and later, a start-up) called Pied Piper that has a revolutionary data compression algorithm. Josh Brener plays the role of Richard’s not-so-intelligent best friend, Nelson “Big Head” Bighetti, who works for tech giant Hooli and starts to gain influence in the Silicon Valley owing to corporate politics. Martin Starr comes in as Bertram Gilfoyle, a network engineer who handles server configuration and system administration at Pied Piper. Finally, Kumar Nanjiani plays Dinesh Chugtai, a disloyal and deceitful programmer from Pakistan who is also an important part of Pied Piper.
Another important character in the show, Erlich Bachman, is played by TJ Miller. Bachman, who owns a start-up incubator, takes up an important role after he invests in Pied Piper and acquires a stake of 10% in the company. However, Bachman’s character is removed from the show in Season 5 after Miller is dropped from the cast.
Other important characters in the show include Monica Hall (played by Amanda Crew), Donald “Jared” Dunn (played by Zach Woods), Laurie Bream (played by Suzanne Cryer), and Jian Yang (played by Jimmy O. Yang). The show’s main antagonist, Gavin Belson, is played by Matt Ross.
Silicon Valley Plot: What’s it about?
Broadly speaking, ‘Silicon Valley’ follows the ups and downs in the lives of those associated with Pied Piper after Richard’s data compression algorithm takes the market by storm. As soon as word of Richard’s work spreads in the Silicon Valley, Gavin Belson, the CEO of tech giant Hooli, offers to buy out Pied Piper for a sum of $10 million. Richard, however, refuses Hooli’s offer and, with an investment of $200,000, sets out with Bertram, Dinesh, and Jared to nurture Pied Piper into a company.
