Snowfall Season 3: Premiere Date, Cast, Recap, Trailer, Update

‘Snowfall’ is an American crime drama television show that airs on FX. It first premiered on July 5, 2017. The show is co-created by Oscar and Emmy-nominated writer and director John Singleton, along with Eric Amadio and Dave Andron. Shoe Money Productions, Dave & Ron Productions, New Deal Entertainment, Groundswell Productions, Underground Films, and FXP are the companies backing the project. Nicolas Stern, Julie DeJoie, Evan Silverberg, and Karen Mayeda Vranek are the producers, while Dave Andron, Eric Amadio, Trevor Engelson, Michael London, Thomas Schlamme, John Singleton, and Leonard Chang are on board as the executive producers.

When ‘Snowfall’ came out, it was almost a very bold move: putting on a new show with relatively unknown actors at the same time when big shows were coming back on the air – ‘Game of Thrones‘, ‘Ray Donovan‘, ‘Ballers‘, but ‘Snowfall’ still managed to stand out. Not because it’s better – those shows are great — but because it had a degree of originality to it; in fact, you can almost smell the authenticity from the outset.

It’s one of those shows that keep you excited to see the next episode. It is excellent for those who are interested in, and appreciate the complexities and disparities of the drug trade. ‘Snowfall’ is violent and honest. It gives off the same feel like the original ‘Miami Vice’ when Crocket and Tubbs walked a fine line between the law and the dark side of the drug world. And while nothing is as good as ‘Breaking Bad‘ when it comes to a show about drugs, ‘Snowfall’ certainly gives ‘Southland’ a run for its money. Needless to say, it has garnered a large fan following as well, and critics have praised the show for an accurate representation of Los Angeles in 1983, and strong performances from the cast members.

Snowfall Cast: Who is in it?

The cast of ‘Snowfall’ stars newcomer Damson Idris as Franklin Saint. As a young entrepreneur, Franklin attempts to use crack dealing as a way to power and to get money for himself and his family. The show also follows Gustavo “El Oso” Zapata (Sergio Peris-Mencheta), a wrestler who gets involved with a power struggle within a crime family; Lucia Villanueva (Emily Rios), the daughter of a Mexican crime lord, who hopes to make a name for herself and get out from under her father’s thumb; and Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson), a sketchy CIA operative who begins an off-book operation to fund the Nicaraguan Contras and has a dark past. Although these characters do not know it, their fates are destined to be entwined. However, the main characters are not just what keeps the show going, as there is a strong supporting cast, helping to provide an authentic experience.

Hopefully, in the upcoming season, we will see the main cast return, and they might even be joined by new characters, as the crime saga unfurls in the heart of a Los Angeles that has long since been forgotten.

Snowfall Plot: What is it about?

The main plot of ‘Snowfall’ starts off in an early 1980s setting, just on the cusp on the rise of crack cocaine, which becomes an insidious urban epidemic, exponentially accelerating urban blight. The series began by showing the disparity between the haves and have-nots, and the solutions provided to close that gap. Reality can be very ugly, and be the basis for an ugly truth, that crack or cocaine stole the hopes and dreams of a society. It is firmly set against the infancy of the crack cocaine epidemic and its ultimate radical impact on the culture as we know it. The story follows numerous characters on a violent collision course. Ultimately, this tells a relatively true story, but not centered around specific real-life characters, and has a flexible feel compared to what the actual situation was back then, but that’s drama and it does work out without you thinking, that it is just not plausible.

Despite the show having all the potential to be a docudrama, it chooses to eschew that and thoroughly indulges in the gangster tropes, and fashions itself into a stylish plot driven and retro pulp thriller, where the influences of filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino are very abundant in the use of groups of people whose paths cross, leading to an escalation in the situation. However, what really stands out about the show is the detail paid to the characterization and the relations among those who are marginalized in society. For example, a relation between a Jewish landlord and a black family would normally never be explored on television, but by attaching the possibility of drugs and violence to the overarching narrative, the series manages to squeeze in some important societal dynamics as well.

Hopefully, in the upcoming season, the show will continue in a similar manner, and we will get to know more about what drives the primary characters, and what fate they are headed towards.
