The Big Bang Theory’s production house Warner Bros Television and the show’s star Jim Parsons joined hands to produce an eight-episode sit-com, ‘Special’, which first premiered on Netflix on April 12, 2019. The show is adapted from Ryan O’ Connell’s memoir I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves. Connell also serves as the writer and executive producer of the show, while taking up the role of the protagonist.
With ‘Special’, Netflix set yet another milestone for itself by approaching this genre with the release of this show and shifting the paradigm. But the platform is not new to this. Remember ‘Atypical’, a humorous comedy based on a high school student with autism, which was a tremendous success.
There is also ABC’s ‘Speechless‘, another comedy based on a teenager with cerebral palsy. CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is also a romantic musical comedy-drama series, which revolves around a woman suffering from borderline personality disorder.
That being said, the question that’s still plaguing all our minds is: Has the series been renewed and when will ‘Special’ season 2 make a comeback? Let’s find out.
Special Cast: Who is in it?
Actor, author, and producer Ryan O’Connell stars as Ryan Kayes, who is a gay man with mild cerebral palsy. Connel is the writer of I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves, which was published by Simon & Schuster in 2015.
The autobiography was subject to huge critical acclaim upon its release. He was also the editor of Thought Catalog and has his contributions featured on Vice, BuzzFeed and several other publications. Additionally, he served as the executive story editor of Will & Grace — NBC’s revival of the original series and as a writer for MTV’s Awkward.
‘Breaking Bad’ starrer Jessica Hecht plays the role of Karen Kayes, Ryan’s mother. Punam Patel enacts the character of Kim Laghari, Ryan’s friend and co-worker. Other actors in recurring roles comprise Marla Mindelle as Olivia, Augustus Prew as Carey, Patrick Fabian as Phil, Bonnie as Samantha Lee, Kat Rogers as Caitie, and Jason Michael Snow as Keaton.
Of course, O’Connell will make a comeback in the second season. It has also been confirmed that Jessica Hecht and Punam Patel will return as series regulars in season 2.
Special Plot: What is it about?
‘Special’ centers around a gay man, who suffers from mild cerebral palsy. However, he is not quite open about this illness yet. In fact, he makes his colleagues believe that his disability is actually the result of a car accident and not an inborn neurological disorder.
The series chronicles the several ups and downs in his life till he reaches his twenties. It is then when he realizes that he should embrace everything that makes him exactly who he is. He should finally come out of his closet. Aptly, the tagline of the show says, ‘Why be normal when you can be…Special?
Yes, ‘Special’ is comic, witty, and funny. But it is also heartwarming, sensitive, inspirational and comes as a breath of fresh air. After all, it is inspired by the real journey of one of the most successful bloggers, who have thousands of followers going through his blogs regularly.
You must have also watched his innumerable videos on YouTube and read his #tweets (which are well, a bit dark, but true). Connell is, in fact, that guy whom you can consult when you have traveled deep down the maze of social media and need the advice to come out of it. He is that person who is snarky and sharp but offers the right solution at the right time.
It is interesting to see how a gay and disabled man with cerebral palsy, who was always one step behind everybody else in his growing years, became such an influencer. The synopsis of the show reads, “Ryan spent years as a Millennial cliché: he had dead-end internships; dabbled in unemployment; worked in his pajamas as a blogger; communicated mostly via text; looked for love online; spent hundreds on “necessary” items, like candles, while claiming to have no money; and even descended into aimless pill-popping. But through extensive trial and error, Ryan eventually figured out how to take his life from bleak to chic and began limping towards adulthood.”
In season 1, Ryan takes several major steps — he moves out from his mother’s home and becomes more confident. In season 2, we will see him leading a more open life, and perhaps, indulging in even more sex!
Special Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘Special’ season 1 released on April 12, 2019, on Netflix, in all its entirety of eight episodes. Each episode is less than 20 minutes and you can finish the entire show in one sitting.
This distinctive and uplifting new series, that for the first time features a gay man with cerebral palsy on-screen, teaches its viewers about how to rewrite one’s fate and go after the life which she or he desires. Sharp and entertaining, ‘Special’ managed to appeal to the younger millennial generation. And yes, it also comes with its own dose of life lessons on what not to do if you want to progress into a happy, stable adult.
In December 2019, Netflix recommissioned the show for another season of eight episodes. This time, each episode will span a run-time of around 30 minutes. Although the streamer has not set an official air date yet, we can expect it to make a comeback soon, considering its quick turnaround time (if you take season 1 into account). In all probability, ‘Special’ season 2 should premiere sometime in April 2020.
The official trailer for ‘Special’ season 1 was released by Netflix on March 29, 2019. You can watch it below and get a better idea of what the show is all about.
