‘Swedish Dicks’ is an American-Swedish comedy series that airs on Pop TV in the US and on Viaplay in Sweden. Created by Peter Stormare, Glenn Lund, Peter Settman, and Andrew Lowery, the show follows two people who set up their own private investigation firm in Los Angeles.

The show was first released on September 2, 2016, by Swedish online streaming network, Viaplay, and Pop TV began its broadcast of the first season of the show in the US on August 9, 2017, in association with Lionsgate TV. After receiving fairly positive reviews, ‘Swedish Dicks’ was renewed for a second season, which premiered on December 25, 2017. Since then, fans of the show have been waiting to hear news on a third season. Here’s everything we know about the prospects of a third season thus far.

Swedish Dicks Cast: Who is in it?

In the show, Peter Stormare and Johan Glans play the roles of the two protagonists, Ingmar Andersson and Axel Kruse, respectively. Further, Vivian Bang plays the role of Sun, and Felisha Cooper steps into the shoes of Sarah. The show also stars ‘The Matrix‘ star Keanu Reeves as Tex Johnson, and Traci Lords as Jane McKinney, and this wraps up the list of main cast members.

Other cast members in the show include Stephanie Koenig as Eve, J.P. Manoux as Lou, Henrik Rutgersson as Trip, Suzanne Ford as Gerty, and Charlie Farrell as Slick Zorro, among a few others.

If the show does return for another season, we would expect the main cast members to make comebacks and reprise their roles.

Swedish Dicks Plot: What is it about?

Before we get into the plot of the show, it is interesting to note that Peter Stormare conceptualized the show back in 2014, inspired by the lives of two of his friends, one of whom is ex-military while the other is an ex-stuntman. Although Stormare initially wrote ‘Swedish Dicks’ as a one-hour-long drama, co-creator Peter Settman suggested that the story could be explored in more depth through a television series. Thus, ‘Swedish Dicks’, the show, was born.

The story revolves around a stuntman, Ingmar Andersson, who gives up his career and starts a private detective firm which offers services at shockingly low prices. While investigating a case, Ingmar meets a DJ called Axel Kruse, who quits his job as a DJ and joins Ingmar. They name their detective firm, Swedish Dicks, and start working as unlicensed detectives in an effort to make a fortune in Los Angeles. The duo solves many challenging cases together and also competes hard with the best detective agency in Los Angeles headed by Jane McKinney. As the show progresses, the Swedish Dicks slowly but surely establish themselves as reputed detectives in Los Angeles. However, things get complicated for the duo when Axel starts probing into Ingmar’s shady past without his knowledge, and one of them emerges to be an illegal immigrant. Another complication for the duo is the mystery around Tex’s death. While Axel and Ingmar are unsure of Tex’s death, Tex occasionally appears in the show as a spectral memory and gives pep talks to the two detectives to help them stay motivated.

The story, quite evidently, is a generic one, and it also uses all the tropes one would associate with subgenres of detective shows, be it that of an investigator with a shady past, a new, unfit partner, shady spouses, and other similar cliches. Yet, there are glimmers of originality in the show, especially around the theme of immigration, and Axel and Ingmar’s bilingual spats are quite enjoyable to watch. The best part of the show, however, has to be the short scenes where Tex makes appearances and delivers pep talks, and these scenes often leave the viewer with the feeling that the show could have used more of Keanu Reeves’ presence.

Commenting on the show, critic Robert Lloyd of The Los Angeles Times had written, “I would like to find ‘Swedish Dicks’ funnier than I do because, the odd burst of tastelessness notwithstanding, it is fundamentally good-hearted and there is something to be said for a good heart in a wicked world. (It is possible even to see that as the series’ theme.) There are some nice performances not only among the principals but some guest and bit players…”

As far as general critical reception is concerned, we don’t know how well or how badly the show has fared among critics since it doesn’t have a score on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers though seem to have moderately enjoyed the show, and ‘Swedish Dicks’ has a decent rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb.

Swedish Dicks Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?

Season 2 of the show released on December 25, 2017. No renewal announcement has been made thus far, thereby making the prospects of a third season weak. However, in July 2018, show co-creator Peter Stormare had expressed his hopes about making Season 3, and had even gone on to say that he wanted Academy Award nominee Angela Bassett to star in Season 3. Our best guess is that if the show does get renewed, ‘Swedish Dicks’ season 3 can release sometime in 2020. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.
