What started as a series of promos for the English Premier League coverage by NBC Sports became one of the finest comedy series of 2020. Jason Sudeikis first introduced Ted Lasso, an American football coach who gets hired to manage an EPL team, in 2013. While NBC only made two such promos, the total absurdity of their premise made them quite memorable. In 2019, when news started coming out that Apple is developing a whole show around the character for their brand-new streaming service, there were quite a few raised eyebrows.

But with the sitcom legend Bill Lawrence’s (‘Scrubs,’ ‘Cougar Town’) involvement as the showrunner, people were curious about it as well. Following its premiere, the show received widespread praise for its expensive production, heart-warming and optimistic plot, and the undeniably charismatic performance by its lead actor. If you are wondering when ‘Ted Lasso’ will be back with season 2, here is everything we know.

Ted Lasso Season 2 Release Date

‘Ted Lasso’ season 1 premiered on August 14, 2020, on Apple TV+ and ran for ten episodes before concluding on October 2, 2020.

On August 19, 2020, Apple confirmed that ‘Ted Lasso’ will be back for a sophomore season, which will also have ten episodes. In an interview, Lawrence indicated that he would like to keep the COVID situation out of the show’s plot. “When we shot it the first time, this wasn’t on our radar,” he stated. “If [COVID-19] is still a day-to-day issue when a second season would come out … people are going to want escapist entertainment. … Half-empty stadiums with Zoom crowds? It’s too weird to even be writing.” So in all probability, ‘Ted Lasso’ season 2 is expected to release sometime in 2021.

Ted Lasso Season 2 Cast: Who is in it?

Sudeikis, who also receives development credits alongside Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly, portrays the eponymous character, the American coach of the fictional AFC Richmond. Hunt is also part of the cast. He plays Lasso’s second-in-command, Coach Beard. Hannah Waddingham stars as Rebecca Welton, the new owner of AFC Richmond. Jeremy Swift is cast as Higgins, Rebecca’s lackey, who later starts questioning her actions.

The cast of the show also includes Phil Dunster as talented but arrogant footballer Jamie Tartt; Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent, a legend of the sport, now dealing with the constraints that aging brings; Nick Mohammed as Nathan Shelley, a soft-spoken and mellow kit-man with an in-depth knowledge of the game; and Juno Temple as glamorous model Keeley Jones, who dates Jamie and shares romantic tension with Roy. Almost all members of the main cast are set to reprise their roles in season 2.

Ted Lasso Season 2 Plot: What can it be About?

‘Ted Lasso’ takes the ridiculousness of its premise and turns it into an inspiring comedy with a lot of heart. Its protagonist, with his Southern charm and infectious optimism, is an easily likable character. In season 1, Ted accepts the job of coaching AFC Richmond, despite having very little knowledge of football. But what he does have is the intuitive ability to deal with the diverse set of personalities that populate his locker room. In the course of the season, he develops personal relationships with each of his players and even wins over the management.

In the season finale, Nate officially becomes the assistant coach. Richmond is set to play Manchester City. Roy makes some tough decisions about his role in the team and picks Isaac (Kola Bokinn) as the captain for the upcoming match. During the game, Roy gets severely injured while tackling Jamie, who is now playing for Man City. In the closing moments of the game, Jamie’s selfless actions lead Man City to a victory and Richmond’s relegation. Afterward, Ted attempts to step down from his position as the coach but Rebecca convinces him to stay with the team.

In season 2, ‘Ted Lasso’ might show whether Roy’s football career is truly over following the injury. It might depict how Lasso plans to get Richmond back into the EPL. Rupert Mannion (Anthony Head), Rebecca’s former husband and the erstwhile owner of the club, might reappear for another attempt to take the club back from her. Jamie might find his way back to Richmond at some point. Expect the romantic triangle between him, Keeley, and Roy to receive some focus in season 2.
