When Can Tenet Be Streamed Online?

Everybody’s been eagerly anticipating ‘Tenet,’ the latest entry in the laudable oeuvre of Christopher Nolan. As one of the finest directors working currently, Nolan needs no introduction, but he’s successfully managed to keep the details of the film a secret. Now we know that ‘Tenet’ follows an agent who has to manipulate time in an attempt to prevent World War III. The protagonist is only armed with the titular word and plunged into a world of shadowy espionage while the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.

Despite the buzz surrounding ‘Tenet,’ even the giant project’s taken a hit due to the coronavirus pandemic. It hits theaters on September 3, 2020, in the US. Nolan, who’s one of the last directors to fight vehemently for movies to remain in theaters, intends the film to be seen in IMAX, 35mm, or 70mm. Despite several viewers realizing the visual delight in watching ‘Tenet’ on-screen, the pandemic scare might be enough to keep away quite a few of them. In case you’re wondering about when you can stream ‘Tenet’ online, we have got you covered.

When Will You be Able to Stream Tenet Online?

The first thing you’ve got to ask yourself is how you plan on watching ‘Tenet’ online. You could opt for VOD services, DVDs, BluRays, or you could wait for it to arrive on a streaming platform. In the case of the former, the standard waiting time between a theatrical release and the film being made available on VOD platforms is a little over 90 days. Usually, there’s a theatrical run for 90 days, and then the movie arrives on DVD, BluRay, or VOD platforms a few weeks after that.

However, if we see Nolan’s last two releases – namely ‘Interstellar‘ and ‘Dunkirk,’ the pattern has been slightly different. Both films took nearly five months to arrive on DVD and other VOD options. Understandably, someone who’s a champion of screening movies might want to put off a VOD release option to encourage viewers to go to the theaters. Nonetheless, in the case of ‘Tenet,’ the pandemic throws a wrench in the plans. Thus, despite the two movies taking longer to come to VOD, ‘Tenet’ may arrive on services like Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, FandangoNow, iTunes, and the Microsoft Store sooner — most likely within three to four months of its release. In all likelihood, you will be able to rent or buy Tenet on VOD sometime in January 2021.

Now, coming to the streaming platforms: normal patterns indicate that a film arrives on streaming services around four months it arrives on VOD. But, some of Nolan’s films have taken longer – around six months. Once again, whichever way we look at it, ‘Tenet’ will not come on a streaming platform until around April 2021. Of course, it might even take longer than that, since ‘Dunkirk’ is still not available on any streaming site. As for which streaming platform might get ‘Tenet,’ that is a different question. Hulu is unlikely to get ‘Tenet’ since it hasn’t had any Nolan film to date. Unfortunately, if you are a Netflix subscriber, you too aren’t going to be lucky. Not a single Nolan movie is available on Netflix US.

Instead, ‘Tenet’ might arrive on HBO Max, since it has a lot of Warner Bros’ content, including some of Nolan’s works like ‘Insomnia.’ The film might also be made available on Peacock since reports suggest that the platform is poised to receive movies from Nolan’s ‘Batman‘ trilogy. For now, we have to wait and perhaps might try to enjoy the film in theaters – as Nolan intended. You can book your tickets here.
