The relationship between America and Russia and has been complicated, to say the least. The Cold War was the time when the tension was at its peak. The resentment wasn’t just on a political level; it was ingrained with the pride of the nation, with the patriotism. It is in this state of affairs that ‘The Americans’ sets its premise.
Created by Joe Weisberg, it follows the story of a couple of Russian spies who pose as a regular American family. The story begins with the era of Ronald Reagan. Weisberg, who also executive produces the show, happens to be a former CIA agent. He takes on a complicated topic and takes a bold stance by asking his viewers and fans to root for the bad guys. Along with him, Joel Fields, Graham Yost, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Gavin O’Connor, Daniel Sackheim, Chris Long and Stephen Schiff also serve as executive producers. Airing on FX, the show gained a strong fan following and was received by critics as one of the best shows of its time.
