‘The Big Short’ Wins PGA Award for Best Film; Shakes up the Oscar Race Completely

This Oscar race keeps getting stranger and more surprising at every turn. Just when experts were leaning on ‘Spotlight’ to take the Best Picture prize, we had ‘The Revenant’ score the most number of Oscar nominations. And just when people thought, it could be between ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ — the two leading nominees — we have a bolt from the blue in the form of Producers Guild who decide to give Best Film award to ‘The Big Short’. Why is this PGA (Producers Guilds of America) award so significant, you may ask ? Well, because, for the last eight consecutive years, the film that has won PGA has gone on to win Best Picture Oscar trophy too. Last Oscar season when critics and everyone else felt ‘Boyhood’ is going to win the coveted Oscar trophy, it was PGA which turned the tide in favor of ‘Birdman’. So, folks, unless something significant happens in the days leading up to the Oscars night, ‘The Big Short’, in all likelihood, is going to take home the Oscar for Best Picture trophy.

Here is the complete list of winners:

Best Motion Picture: ‘The Big Short’
Best Animated Picture: ‘Inside Out’
Best Documentary: ‘Amy’
Best TV, Drama: ‘Game of Thrones’
Best TV, Long Form: ‘Fargo’
Best TV, Comedy: ‘Transparent’
