‘The Biggest Loser’ is an American reality television show that has successfully run for over a decade since its premiere on October 19, 2004. The show chronicles the lives of “heavyweight” contestants as they battle it out to reach their weight goal and become The Biggest Loser, taking home a grand cash prize.

David Broome (‘Ultimate Beastmaster’), Mark Koops (‘Making a Scene with James Franco’), and Ben Silverman (‘The Office,’ ‘Haunted’) serve as the creators of the show. The popular show has spawned over 30 international adaptations, most of which still continue to air, successfully.

The journey of ‘The Biggest Loser’ has not been smooth. Over the course of 17 seasons, the show has had its share of achievements and controversies. Especially the last few seasons of the competition show, saw a drastic decline in the ratings, as the makers received a shed-load of flak from the ex-contestants and health experts, who thrashed the show for promoting an unhealthy lifestyle and exercising poor treatment on contestants, for faking authenticity.

You must be wondering whether your favorite show will ever get a shot at redemption, blessing the fandom with ‘The Biggest Loser’ season 18? Well, we have the answers to your questions. Read on.

What is The Biggest Loser About?

Let’s admit the fact that we all want to be the biggest loser when it comes to weight, and nothing’s better than being rewarded with a cash prize for the same. It’s like killing two birds with one stone! ‘The Biggest Loser’ is loosely based on this concept but it’s so much more. The basic premise of the competition has been the same for all formats since 2004.

As the 30-week competition commences, the base weight of all the contestants are recorded by a weigh-in. The contestants are then divided into two teams – Red team and Blue team. Each episode features participants contesting in numerous weight-loss challenges, ranging from clocked one-mile race, some group therapy, to providing healthy food recipes and lessons on balancing nutrition.  As the show progresses, viewers connect with participants via confessionals that reveal their personal life, family and reasons for participating on the show.

A face off takes place between both the teams in each episode, and the winning team is decided on the basis of the collective weight each team loses against their starting weight. The contestant who loses the least individual weight, from the losing team gets eliminated and sent home. Towards the end, when the total number contestants boil down to predetermined number, the teams are dissolved and the contestants then compete individually, against each other.

The finale includes both the final contestants, and the eliminated ones who come back for the final showdown. The latter compete for a lesser prize while people who survived throughout log heads for the prestigious title of ‘The Biggest Loser’ who is also awarded the grand prize of $100,000.

Apart from this, each season is based on a particular theme and is titled accordingly. Like for example, the theme of ‘The Biggest Loser’ season 17 or ‘The Biggest Loser: Temptation Nation’, centers on providing the contestants with various temptations, comprising food, shopping, money and electronics. Thus, adding to the difficulty factor.

And for Season 18, the show promises to cater to methods that reflect the health and fitness needs, existing in today’s world. For implementing the same, the makers are tweaking the elimination process and adding an after-care package, that will assist the contestants in maintaining the weight, even after the show ends.

Shedding more light upon the matter, show’s host Bob Harper told E!, “It’s a motivating factor for the contestants, but also it’s part of their story and their transformation as well, sort of the failures and the successes both that we saw this season impacted you know who they were from the start of the show to the end.”

The Biggest Loser Cast: Host and Contestants

As it’s a reality show, the contestants of ‘The Biggest Loser’ change with each season. In ‘The Biggest Loser’ season 17, Roberto Hernandez beat other strong-willed contestants, winning the title to take home the prize money of $250,000.

‘The Biggest Loser’ season 18 features 12 contestants and two teams. Former trainer turned host Bob Harper is set to reprise his role as the host in season 18, while fitness and bodybuilding expert Steve Cook, and cancer survivor and weight loss inspiration Erica Lugo act as trainers.
