‘Marvel’s The Defenders’, simply known as ‘The Defenders’, is a superhero mini-series which is available on Netflix. The show, as the name suggests, is a crossover event of a series of pretty popular Marvel shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – namely ‘Daredevil‘, ‘Jessica Jones‘, ‘Luke Cage‘, and ‘Iron Fist‘. Essentially, the show is the Avengers equivalent of MCU television series and follows a storyline which sees the aforementioned heroes come together to save New York City from a grim fate.

‘The Defenders’ was conceived of years back and development for it started in 2013. After a lengthy production process, ‘The Defenders’ premiered in New York City four years later on July 31, 2017. Less than a month later, all eight episodes of the show was released on Netflix on August 18, 2017.

‘The Defenders’ was largely liked by fans and critics, as is evident from the show’s ratings – on IMDb, ‘The Defenders’ enjoys a good rating of 7.4/10 based on over 77,000 votes, while on Rotten Tomatoes, it enjoys a good Tomatometer score of 78% with the Critics Consensus reading, “Marvel’s The Defenders further develops well-known characters in an action-packed arc whose payoff packs more than enough of a punch to offset its flaws.” Understandably, the show left many impressed, and fans have been wondering whether The Defenders will return for Season 2.

The Defenders Cast: Who is in it?

In spite of having just eight episodes, ‘The Defenders’ has a pretty long list of main characters.

Among the protagonists, Charlie Cox steps into the shoes of lawyer-turned-masked vigilante Matt Murdock / Daredevil while Krysten Ritter plays the no nonsense super detective, Jessica Jones. Mike Colter, meanwhile, plays the role of the seemingly invincible Luke Cage, and Finn Jones plays billionaire Buddhist warrior monk Danny Rand / Iron Fist.

Those familiar with ‘Daredevil’ will also be glad to know that Scott Glenn stars as Matt Murdock’s blind mentor, Stick, and Élodie Yung steps into the shoes of Matt’s former flame, the murderous Elektra Natchios. Even Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, Matt’s best friend, is there in ‘The Defenders’ and his role is of course played by Elden Henson.

Meanwhile, other characters from the aforementioned series also feature. Deborah Ann plays Jessica Jones’ adoptive sister Trish Walker, Simone Missick plays Luke Cage’s ally and Harlem police detective Misty Knight, and Jessica Henwick plays Danny Rand’s lover and former member of the Hand, Colleen Wing.

Finally, three time Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver plays the role of Alexandra, the leader of the mysterious and evil organization known as the Hand.

The Defenders Plot: What is it about?

The events in ‘The Defenders’ take place a few months after the events of Daredevil Season 2 when the mysterious and evil organization known as the Hand begins to make its growing presence felt in New York City.

[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD]

The arrival of the Hand simultaneously brings with it its adversaries, and Stick, a blind warrior of an organization called the Chaste arrives in New York to deal with the threat. Simultaneously, billionaire warrior monk Danny Rand arrives in New York, and before long, the city’s other defenders – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage – join the fray. However, the quartet of heroes finding the going tough at the beginning as they fail to function as a team.

Over the course of the show, the four main heroes overcome their own personal challenges and rise up to combat the Hand, whose malevolent intentions are not revealed until much later in the show. The performances put in by the cast members are pretty convincing and the fast-paced, taut story and spectacular action make it a binge-worthy show.

There are major plot twists also, and in the sixth episode, two of the show’s main characters are killed off in an unforeseen twist. First, Matt Murdock’s mentor and the Chaste warrior Stick is killed by Elektra Natchios, who proceeds to kidnap Danny Rand and bring him to the Hand. When Elektra returns to the Hand with Rand in her custody, she then proceeds to murder her boss and the Hand leader Alexandra in cold blood and assumes the leadership of the Hand herself. The next two episodes are a blur of action and plot progression, and the show ends with our heroes surviving a nearly fatal encounter.

The Defenders Season 2 Release Date: When is it coming out?

‘The Defenders’ season 1 premiered on August 18, 2017. Given the ending of season 1, many had hoped that the four heroes would reunite sometime in the future to save New York City from another threat. However, fans’ hopes were shattered when Netflix, towards the end of 2018, subtly stated that it had pulled the plug on ‘The Defenders’.

The cancellation, while unfortunate, was not completely surprising considering that signs of Netflix’s unwillingness to continue the show had started showing. In March 2018, in an interview with Vulture, ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘The Defenders’ star Krysten Ritter had said, “Y’know, I had a great time doing The Defenders and honestly, it was such a good experience that I would even do it again. I don’t think we are doing it again. It was never intentioned to do it again, but, you know, if I was given another opportunity, I would.” Three months later in June 2018, Marvel TV head Joseph Loeb, while responding to a Reddit question about The Defenders Season 2, had said, “Not in the plans right now, but you never know!”

Thus, it was pretty evident that Netflix was going to pull the plug on the show. The only question was when. The cancellation announcement finally came in October 2018.

But fans of the show shouldn’t be completely disappointed. You never know what Disney, who owns Marvel, has in their mind. It is quite possible that in a couple of years time, we get to see ‘The Defenders’ season 2.
