An American web television miniseries, Marvel’s The Defenders, or simply The Defenders is created by Petrie and Ramirez for Netflix, based on the Marvel Comics character Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, who come together to form a Marvel superhero team. The miniseries is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that shares continuity with the subsequent films produced by the franchise, and it is the culmination of different series of interconnected shows from both Marvel and Netflix. The miniseries is produced by Marvel Television in association with Nine and a Half Fingers Inc., Goddard Textiles and ABC Studios along with Ramirez serving as the showrunners.

The Defenders premiered on July 31, 2017, in the US, with all eight episodes released on Netflix on August 18, 2017. Each episode is 44 to 55 minutes long. The series is set a few months after the second season of Daredevil, and a month after the first season of Iron Fist. Critics were mostly positive about this series but a bit disappointed by the choice of the main villain for the overall series. Even with good reviews, this series witnessed the largest week over week drop in viewership, although Netflix had claimed that this series is one of the most awaited series globally before it’s release. The miniseries is touted to be the least viewed Marvel Netflix show. However, credit can be given to timeline of the series and its collation with other series that was appropriately handled.

Marvel’s The Defenders Plot: What’s it about?

Just like the Avengers, with the much-needed push to form a strong alliance against the alien army led Loki, that comes in the form of Phil Coulson’s death, The Defenders, similarly, get their push from Claire Temple, a courageous medical professional, who has been common in each one’s lives who brought them together. The castigator Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage come together in their battle against a common enemy, the Hand, who is in New York City itself. Two of the series’ most important characters succumb to their deaths in the sixth episode (spoiler alert!) of the series. The organization is headed by a woman named Alexandra who is the victim of a terminal illness. It is revealed in the subsequent episodes she had lived for hundreds of years, owing to a mysterious substance that has been responsible for the Hand’s immortality. To stay alive, she is in need of more fuel but eventually is killed by Elektra, who is also responsible for the murder of her father figure. In the end, the Hand’s power source gets destroyed, and our heroes survive. Their final scene together brings some hope that’s all well and good, as long as that hope doesn’t mean losing Claire.

Marvel’s The Defenders Cast: Who’s in it?

The limited series stars Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, and Finn Jones as Iron Fist, all performing their roles from their individual series. It also stars Eka Darville, Elden Henson, Jessica Henwick, Deborah Ann Woll, Élodie Yung, Rosario Dawson, Simone Missick, Ramón Rodríguez, Rachael Taylor, and Scott Glenn, all also returning from previous respective series.

Marvel’s The Defenders Season 2: Canceled or Renewed?

In June 2018, it was announced that Marvel had no current plans to continue the story of The Defenders and the following month, Netflix vice president of original content, Cindy Holland noted: “The Defenders could continue, but there are no plans at this time”. This miniseries was considered as the end of phase one of the Marvel Netflix series. So, there has not been any announcements regarding the renewal of the second season but since it’s about Marvel heroes, let’s not give up hope.
