‘The Ghost Bride’ is a Netflix original that chronicles the lives of a young woman, Li Lan, and her family, living in the 1980s Malacca. Li Lan receives a proposal to marry the son of the Lim family, who have deep pockets. The catch? The son is dead. Since her family is not affluent, Li Lan is asked to become the ghost bride by her family, but things take a sinister turn and Li Lan realizes her family isn’t safe anymore. And the road to safety is haunted by unspeakable entities.
Based on a best-selling novel of an acclaimed author Choo Yangsze, the supernatural thriller has been adapted to screen by a team of talented writers, led by celebrated Taiwanese-American writer, Wu Kai Yu. Her notable credits include ‘Hannibal,’ and ‘The Flash.’ Malaysian filmmakers Quek Shio Chuan (‘Guang The Movie’) and Ho Yuhang (‘At the End of Daybreak,’ ‘Mrs K’) are at the helm of the Mandarin original.
The show features a love triangle, coupled with Chinese urban legends and supernatural twists. If you’re fascinated by horror movies/shows revolving around forbidden age-old customs and a jinxed protagonist, then ‘The Ghost Bride’ would be right up your alley.
The first season of the show was well-received. Now, the question arises: will there be a The Ghost Bride Season 2? We will delve into that question, but first let’s quickly look into the details of the series.
The Ghost Bride Cast: Who is in it?
Huang Peijia steps into the role of the ghost bride Li Lan, a whip-smart and compassionate woman, who is set to marry a ghost to clear off the family debts. She is best known for her roles in ‘Roseki’ and ‘Cha Cha for Twins.’ Joining Li Lan, in her mission to save the life of her father, is Taiwanese actor Wu Kang Ren who plays the male protagonist, Er Lang. He is probably in love with Li Lan but fails to express it. Wu Kang Ren is also known as Chris Wu and is famous for his role in ‘A Touch of Green,’ ‘Autumn’s Concerto’ and ‘White Ant.’
The talented cast comprises Malaysian-Mandarin language music expert and theater artist Tian Tze Kuang, Janet Hsieh (‘Fun Taiwan’, ‘A Bread Factory’), and ‘The Receptionist’ fame Teresa Daley in pivotal roles.
The Ghost Bride Plot: What is it About?
Set in the year 1890, the show revolves around Li Lan and her family who are on their beam-ends. They soon receive a marriage proposal for Li Lan, from the well-heeled Lim Family at a party in the Lim household. Since the Lims have recently lost their son Tian Ching, to a deadly disease, Li Lan assumes she is paired opposite the charming, Tian Bai. Unfortunately, the mother reveals that she has to be a ghost bride to the dead son Tian Ching.
Why? Quick flashback: Before his demise, Tian Ching is smitten with Li Lan after he spots her at a festival and expresses his wish to marry her to his parents.
Present day: Therefore, the Lims wish to honor their dead son’s last wish. Li Lan’s desperate family is drowning in debt and pressurize her for the wedding. Things start getting weird soon, as Li Lan’s father gets sick with an obscure condition. If that’s not enough, the spirit of Tian Ching visits Li Lan in her dream, only to reveal that the real cause of his death is not an illness but murder by poison, at the hands of a family member.
Li Lan’s father’s condition is deteriorating and Tian Ching informs her that she could lose her father forever, if his spirit doesn’t return to his body within 10 days. Li Lan makes a deal with Tian Ching – she finds his murderer and Tian Ching aids her in saving her father.
Li Lan begins rounding up suspects and ends up meeting Er Lang, a heavenly guard with mystical powers who is here to help her in her mission. For her mission to bring her father’s spirit back, Li Lan is sucked into the afterlife. Meanwhile, a love triangle develops between Er Land, Li Lan and Tian Bai. Will is responsible for Tian Ching’s death? Who will Li Lan choose between the two men?
When is The Ghost Bride Season 2 Release Date?
‘The Ghost Bride’ season 1 premiered on Thursday, January 23, 2020. All the episodes were made available for streaming on the same day on Netflix.
As far as the next season goes, here’s what we know. ‘The Ghost Bride’ has already creating a lot of buzz among the audiences, especially people who have read the book or are familiar with the true story behind the show. Not a true story exactly but the ghost bride is a 3000-year-old tradition in the Chinese culture, in which a woman has to marry a young deceased son in order to continue the lineage and also to prevent bringing any misfortune to the family. Considering the popularity of the show, we would be surprised if it doesn’t get another season. If renewed, ‘The Ghost Bride’ season 2 can release sometime in January 2021.
