The Halcyon Season 2: Premiere Date, Cast, Recap, Update

‘The Halcyon’ is a British period drama that has been created by Charlotte Jones and written by her, Jack Lothian, Martha Hillier, and Sarah Dollard. The show is directed by Stephen Woolfenden, Rob Evans, Justin Hardy, and Philip John. The series airs on ITV and first premiered on January 2, 2017.

Set in 1940, ‘The Halcyon’ is a narration of the series of events unfolding in a five-star hotel in London during the World War. Not only does it view the war through the spectrum of this hotel, but gives us a view into London society as well. If one needs to think of hotels during wartimes and how they tell tales, one needs to think back to the powerful and intense ‘Hotel Rwanda‘ or the much lighter and quirkier ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel‘. While ‘The Halcyon’ is not in the same leagues, it does show how the drama unfolds within the hotel premises while the world happens to be at war. Critics have compared the unfolding of events to ‘Downton Abbey‘ saying that the only difference is all this takes place in a hotel.

The Halcyon Cast: Who is in it?

The most notable member of the cast of ‘The Halcyon’ is, of course, Steven Mackintosh — famous for his roles in the ‘Underworld‘ movies — who plays the part of Richard Garland, the general manager of the hotel. Olivia Williams, famous for ‘Rushmore‘ and ‘The Sixth Sense‘, appears as Priscilla or Lady Hamilton, who is the wife of Lord Hamilton, owner of the hotel. Alex Jennings of ‘The Crown‘ and ‘Babel‘ fame plays the role of Lord Hamilton, who is also a politician. There are several other characters, either related to the Hamiltons or people who work for the hotel and they all help in portraying the situation to a degree of dramatic accuracy.

Speaking about their roles, Williams said that Lady Hamilton might be a trope, but it was fun to play her. She continued that her character is “an inherited aristocrat with a sharp wit who is racist, classist, homophobic…Everything you’d want her to be, to be truly hateful!” Mackintosh merely commented on how his character is interesting and while it might appear that the character is superficial after first appearances, there is more to the story.

If there is an upcoming season, we would definitely want to see the main cast return, and hopefully, we will see some new faces too, in what some people have commented to be a sexier version of ‘Downton Abbey’.

The Halcyon Plot: What is it about?

‘The Halcyon’ is set against the backdrop of a lavish five-star hotel in London during in the World War. The drama unfolds through various events that include political and family issues happening in the hotel. The story revolves around super rich people and their dark sides that involve illegal affairs, political vendetta, and death. The drama also gives the viewers some beautiful, breezy moments while dealing with a sensitive and complicated love story of Richard’s daughter, Emma and Lady Hamilton’s son.

The show is also about the evil and dark sides of the affluent people manipulating and harming those with lesser privileges for their personal benefits. The final episode is nerve-wracking with Mackintosh delivering a powerful performance, which is bound to enthrall the viewers and completely mesmerize them. It also shows a few wonderful moments between Lady Hamilton and Garland which will definitely be etched in the memories of the audience forever. Garland wholly owns the episode with his flawless and graceful performance. The viewers are left with the last memories of a bomb exploding inside the hotel.

The hotel acts as a sort of mirror that shows the war and repressed feelings at a microcosmic level, which is then mirrored by the actual war raging outside at the macrocosmic level. Just as wars usher in new world orders, so does the war within the hotel. The new order is in terms of ownership, and it is not as much as an outright war, as an unfortunate death that gives the control of the hotel to Lady Hamilton, who was aware of her husband’s indulgences beforehand and thus has an ax to grind. Naturally, viewers were left shocked at the cliffhanger, and if there is an upcoming season, we cannot wait for the show to pick up from where it left off.

The Halcyon Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘The Halcyon’ season 1 premiered on January 2, 2017, on ITV. However, the network canceled the show after one series. Naturally, there was outrage among the fans and a lot of petitions were circulated. The producer also addressed the issue. “I think with any of these things, you always hope that it could continue,” Croucher said in an interview. “Our plan was to see if we could do a five-year series, with each series being another year of the war. We had storylines for the entire second series, and we had two scripts ready to go. We knew who survived, we knew who didn’t, and we had a plan moving forward. The plan was always a five-year series.”

Though, fans should not lose all their hopes. There’s still a possibility that some other network picks up the show. If that happens, we will update you about ‘The Halcyon’ season 2 release date.
