‘The Kids Are Alright’ is an American sitcom series that airs on ABC. The series first premiered on October 16, 2018. The comedy series has been created by Tim Doyle, who has worked on projects like ‘Grace Under Fire’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory‘. The events of the show are somewhat based on Doyle’s own childhood, making it semi-autobiographical.
The story centers around an Irish Catholic family who are trying to raise their eight sons in the suburbs of Los Angeles around 1972. Naturally, the plot is driven by the trials and tribulations that the family had to face at that time. The 70s were some crazy times. Parenting those days was on a different level from today. This is probably what makes that era a favorite subject for television shows these days.
Naturally, the desire to know about a different time period, when added to the nostalgia for the past, accounted for quite a large fan base for the series. Critics too lauded the way the show was handled, saying that it was surprisingly thoughtful and poignant, and had a classic sitcom feel to it.
The Kids Are Alright Cast: Who is in it?
The main cast of ‘The Kids Are Alright’ includes Michael Cudlitz of ‘Southland‘ and ‘Band of Brothers’ fame as Mike Cleary, the father of the family that the show is based on. The others in the main cast include Mary McCormack of ‘The West Wing’ fame as Peggy Cleary, the mother; Sam Straley as Lawrence Cleary, the first son; Caleb Martin Foote as Eddie Cleary, the second son; Sawyer Barth as Frank Cleary, the third son; Christopher Paul Richards appears in the role of Joey Cleary, the fourth son; Jack Gore as Timmy Cleary, the fifth son; Andy Walken as William Cleary, the sixth son; Santino Barnard as Pat or Patrick Cleary, the seventh son, and lastly Sawyer and Jax Laucius as Andy Cleary, who is the eight son and an infant on the show.
The main cast is bolstered by the presence of recurring and guest stars. Some of the guest stars have been truly notable like Ken Jeong, best known as Leslie Chow in the ‘Hangover’ movies. He appeared in the role of Grover Young a co-worker of Mike. These characters all, in their own way, make the show as successful as it is.
The Kids Are Alright Plot: What is it about?
The main plot of ‘The Kids Are Alright’ is set in the times of the 70s, and this comedy series tells the story of an old-fashioned Irish-Catholic family called the Clearys. Since this was also one of America’s most turbulent decades, the Clearys are constantly battling to survive and progress. They have eight naughty boys who have all the fun in the world without getting caught by their parents. One fine day, their oldest son Lawrence returns home and lets them know that he has quit seminary so he can go away and “save the world.” This overcrowded house with three bedrooms, one bathroom now has ten people. The rest is pandemonium.
Tim Doyle is the creator and executive producer of the show. In a public address, he revealed that the Timmy Cleary character is inspired by his own life. In the addressing, he was asked by a reporter why there are not many female characters in the show. He responded by saying that this is his story and that is how he wants it to be.
Tim Doyle feels that a lot of parents who lived in the 70s were still stuck in the comfortable times of 50s and 60s. He also said that his siblings wonder how the project will pan out in the long run as more seasons come into play and whether they will have any influence on the storyline of the project. Mary McCormack, the lead actress in the series, said that even though she was in a family of three kids, she grew up with a lot of cousins. So she was okay living in a family with so many kids around. Obviously, for anyone who has seen the show, will realize that Doyle himself narrates the story as a grown-up Timmy Cleary, looking back at the wonder years. In this aspect, there are parallels to shows like ‘The Wonder Years’ and ‘Modern Family‘. The show’s very beginning sets the mood with a series of a fuzzy montage of polaroids with the narration going, “I turned 12 in the summer of 1972. It was an awesome time to be a kid. It was the Wild West. Bike helmets hadn’t been invented. Or car seatbelts. Or nutrition. Or even normal adult supervision.”
The best part of the show is the way the plot is structured, which is basically Doyle’s recollections which are infused with humor. We get the picture that one kid is going to college, and the other is an infant. Everyone in between is just trying to get away with mischief. Coming to the parents themselves, the mother is the practical one, and the father is stubborn and tough. Overall, there are a lot of things to like about the show, especially since that era had a lot of possibilities and it is all reflected in the plot, which is soaked with nostalgia and that works.
